can anyone recommend a good NAS that i can use to rip from my hdx directly, also needs to be very quite. nas will be in the listening room
thanks
Can I ask why the nas will be in the listening room?
to avoid running cables, can wifi be trusteed?
Hi 2roomsor1,
I have a 1 tb HDX and got to your stage some time ago.
I decided to move all my music onto a NAS and to then have the HDX rip directly to the NAS.
I also decided that I only wanted to do this once so went for a large NAS, and have a 12tb, 6 drive unit from Iomega.
I have all the music on the NAS in a music store format and the NAS is set up in raid 5 format.
I also have off line copies of everything.
Would recommend the iomega
So presumably the network router and ISP etc is all coming into the living room?
On that basis, absolutley I would look to remove the router from the living room in an instant. For the sake of one ethernet cable this makes total sense.
Tell us the layout of your network.
I had my small Synology nas (212j) in the same room as the hi fi for many months. I have to say that I am much happier now that it's in a different room. (This did require getting a cat 5 cable in the walls sorted out.) The Synology is quiet, but still a little audible. (Not audible over the music however.)
And there must be some psychological factor; I enjoy the hi fi more with all of the 'computery' stuff out of the room it's in.
Hi,
I've been using the "Homeplugs" solution to connect my HDX to my router for some time, and have had no issues whatsoever with mains noise.
Naim do suggest this as a means of providing a robust network connection, given that there's no mains interference.
Like yourself, I found that my HDX was filling up, and, a few days ago, added a D-link 2 x 2Tb NAS, and transferred all the existing rips from the HDX to this, setting up the HDX so that all future rips go directly to the NAS. This means that all things "computery" are not in the music room too.
It was dead easy............well Phil Harris seemed to think so, as he did the whole thing for me remotely!
I'd suggest emailing Phil for initial guidance.
Aw ra best,
Dave.
Phil is the man when it comes to remote sorting.....like an experienced pilot guiding you down before an imminent crash.
It felt like that to me anyhow!

I am in a similar position as you Dave , except i haven't yet moved whats on my rather full HDX to my NAS yet. The HDX is one of the original 2 x400 units ; is it possible to move the contents to my NAS at home or will it have to my sent away to have that done ?

Paul I have the same setup for wifi (well in reverse), a Time Capsule hard wired to my router, and an Airport Extreme elsewhere in the house to extend the wi fi. It's a very good wi fi solution, better than I ever have, but yes even that may not be good enough for hi res music streaming.
Also look at Synology nas -- they are highly regarded as well. I've had perfect results with mine.
And you should listen before swapping the HDX for a UnitiServe; as players they will sound different. I assume you use the HDX as a player and not just a server. Do you use an external dac? If not, the UnitiServe won't help as it has no dac built in (no analog outputs like the HDX).

I looked for a nas for some time, the main requirement was that it should be silent. The Netgear Duo v2 is sitting under my table and I have no problem with that setup.
Why move the music away from the Hdx. You lose the internal backup of the albums on the hdx wich is not a good thing to do. Even with the second disk in the hdx it is a good idea to backup to a nas. I do not know if you can backup a music store on the nas with the backup tool in the hdx?
I would not downgrade to a Unityserve, the hardware in the HDX is better and it is argued by some the digital out on the hdx is better than on the other servers. Claus
Hi
I use a Netgear ready nas duo with 2x2TB drives, works very well...
You could also upgrade the HDX to a 2TB drive...(return to Naim)

This is a very nice solution. I upgraded my UnitiServe from 1tb to 2tb, and not just the space but the added functionality (Downloads folder) were really nice. If it's possible to upgrade your particular unit, consider it!
Don't think that is an option for the original HDX model, only the singe drive units !
Thought about doing this for my 1tb unit, but as I already have 3.5 tb of music, no real point in the upgrade for me
For info the cost of the 1tb to 2 tb drive upgrade is approx 500 Stg
