XLD experts please help

Hi all,

My new NDX should be with me shortly, so have borrowed the dealers unit to ensure I am ripping correctly. All seems good with the help of all the topics on this forum. However on thing I would like to sort early on. My "custom format is" %A/%T/%n-%t  allowing a new album to automatically add to an existing artist folder (or create one) however the song titles always end .flac    i.e can't stop this thing we started.flac   (you can see I have got to ripping "B"s) now there is no %f in that "custom format" so I thought it wouldnt add the .flac. It obviously does report flac in the file type which is great.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Second sneeky question, do you think I can use two Mac's to ripp cd's into the same NAS at the same time to double my efficiency? I would avoid ripping the same artist at the same time of course.

Thanks in advance

The filename will always have the extension .flac if you are ripping to flac as a format, just like when you save a spreadsheet it will have the extension .xlsx on the filename!

Thanks Rich27. So is this image correct (if it shows up/it didn't ) ie nameofsong.flac, and then "kind" later on? I cant work out how to post a picture of a screen grab but:

Name                            Date modified           size            Kind

01-Hells bells.flac          Yesterday 22.44       55. 5MB     FLAC Audio file

02-Shoot to thrill.flac     Yesterday 22.47       56.3 MB     FLAC Audio file

Is that how it should look? the first .flac is actually part of the song name.

Thanks

I use HDX ripping, so it's done or me, but the detail shown does not look right.

It looks like the name is the file name rather than track name, hence the .flac extension

If you are just viewing the files in Finder, then that looks right (see screenshot below for one of my albums ripped with XLD).

The filename will always have .flac or .aif or whatever (depending on format) when you view it in Finder on your Mac.

When you have your NDX the songs will be named (on the NDX screen or within the app) using the metadata embedded in the file, not the actual file name.  So assuming your metadata is correct the song names will show up without the file extension.

Thanks guys, Cbr600 you're  just showing off

Rich27 that's exactly what is in my finder, but when it plays on the NDX it shows the .flac extension as if its the song title because that is then followed by .wav as the NAS is set to transpose on the fly. Hmmmm, guess I'm a little more confused now, but appreciate the help.

It also shows the .flac in n-stream

Try turning off the transcoding on the NAS, do the filenames still show the file extension?

Which NAS do you have?

Posted on: 14 March 2013 by maccaa

212+,  I wil try turning off the transcoding tomorrow, I have looked back at one of you're earlier posts and noticed that your custom format was/is slightly different to mine pretty sure mine is %n-%t ie hyphen between the two whereas your screen shot doesn't show a hyphen, not sure if that makes any difference.

i will report back tomorrow if I may, just running Superduper on my MacBook at the moment so time for some zzzzzzz's

The hyphen just inserts a hyphen between track number and name, simple as!  See my screenshot above (no hyphens).

You could also download the free ds audio app, this can also be used to control the NDX.  This really is excellent, try it and see what the file names look like there.

Think my post lost a few of my edits !!, glad I know what he hyphen is for now,  I am using n-stream and it is great, even managed to get " automation " working with my 202. However the song titles are still .flac on n-stream as well, really appreciate your help.

Just updating, I have tried a rip in dbPoweramp and the results of the rip are the same, both in the folder and on the NDX screen/n-Stream app. I have checked my XLD settings with Rich27's posted screen shots and also James n's.

Starting to struggle now

Have you tried turning the transcoding off.  When I had transcoding turned on for aiff files I used to get this effect with the file name showing as filename.aif, does not happen with transcoding turned off.

Posted on: 15 March 2013 by maccaa

Have turned off the transcoding and "applied" no difference whatsoever to the NDX screen ie includes the WAV at the end, so rebooted NAS, still no difference and so rebooted NDX, still reading the same... just wondering if running DSM 4.2 may be the issue?

Ok, just a little update (though not overly helpful) it appears that anything configured on the NAS takes longer to implement than expected. On the post above I mentioned that transcoding was switched off and nothing changed. Well this morning it has? the .WAV has disappeared off the NDX screen. Also I noticed that "use Hi-Fi language" was selected in n-stream. I have turned this off. Now nothing seems to happen straight away but the.flac at the end of the file name is no longer shown on n-stream or NDX, however as a small test I have turned transcoding back on the NAS but its still claims to be playing .flac not transcoding to .WAV, this may be as clear as mud to those who do not have the problem, but may help someone in the future. I will let you know if the NAS decides to transcode to .WAV eventually. Rich27 appreciated your help with this.

No problem, glad to be of some help.

To be fair I don't think it is necessarily the NAS, when I had an NDX I used to have many such little glitches!
