Unitiserve doesn't detect new music in Download folder

Posted by: T38.45 on 26 March 2013

Hi folks,

I bought some tracks from B&W and Linn, moved files to the US download but it doesn' t detect it. I can see the files from my pc/ mac and they are not corrupted...

Did same copy on my Qnap/twonky/minimserv and it works...Files are in flac and apple- format.

Any ideas?

Tx

I had a problem with Elgar's Enigma Variations, which I downloaded from B&W, in that some of the tracks didn't appear in Nserve or Nstream.

Issues sometimes arise with the metadata. Are the song titles too long? Are there any unusual characters in them? This tip was given to by Steven Hopkins At Naim. I shortened and simplified the titles and it worked.

Hi Keith,
many thanks!
So characters like: !,-.: #, etc are in the file-names and the meta-data....I'll try to remove with XLD!

Yes, that's right.

I'm assuming you've created a share, it's online and you've rescanned it, by the way :-)

Also, How are you editing the metadata? I use Media Monkey.

I'm using the internal 2TB drive of US only. For metadata,  I'm using XLD on Mac (works good so far:-)

Ralf you might find my thread on this same issue from a few weeks ago.  No definitive answer but re-tagging the files did fix the issue.  When re-tagging manually (with Tag, for OS X) did not work, I used one of those programs that does it itself -- going online to a database and entering all of the metadata -- and that fixed it.

I can only guess that there was something corrupt in a tag.  But it's only a guess.

Bart,

thanks- there is a button in the US tool section called "rebuild database". does this solve the problem?

I have not tried that, as others have reported that a rebuild can take a VERY long time.  And given that totally re-doing the metadata seems to have solved my immediate issue, I don't think I'll push that button just to see what happens.

Bart, you mention "Tag" for OSX and in another post I see you are also using "Jaikoz" have you a preference or does each have its own benefits?

Come on, Bart! Do us all a favour and press the button.

You could be shining example of human nature. We all are what we are because of our inquisitive attitude.

...I used the "rescan" network share button, at least some music is there again!

Tag is very quick, simple, easy to see the fields, and just does one thing (I think) -- lets the user edit tags from the keyboard.  Jaikoz is much more comprehensive, and the interface is MUCH more filled with all sorts of stuff that one might not need.  But what it can do is scan the music files, identify the tracks, and pull down metadata and automatically (re)populate the metadata.

With my one cd that could not be indexed by my uServe, changes I made with Tag did not help, whereas totally re-doing metadata with Jaikoz did.  Why?  I have no idea.

"Rescan" I do often.  When I add music to the Downloads folder, an immediate forced rescan usually makes it show up.  Otherwise, it takes a while.  (I never have figured out how often the server re-scans on its own . . . )

In answer to original question, have a look at Naim Desktop Client in the  Tools, Status & Messages, System Messages window for the date you (re)scanned the share. You'll find a bunch of error messages - click on one and the reason for the problem appears at the bottom of the window.  It can be fairly obtuse (i.e. short), but you'll get the idea.

I find that removing just the quote marks ( " ) from the tag data (usually track title) fixes the problem of 'where's my music gone'.   MP3 tag allows you to create a script to do this easily for FLAC and other files, but other suggestions abound above this post.
