No cover-art when playing from USB-stick
Posted by: Alco on 28 March 2013
Hi guys,
My hardly 1 week old ND5xs is already sounding lovely and I'm getting use to the n-stream app now.
(perhaps not as intuïtive as Ipeng, but gimme a few more days/weeks and I can operate it blindfolded)
I'm using LMS as UPNP-server for my ND5xs and it workes fine!
Still, there's one issue still not solved.
When I copy some albums directly from HD to USB-stick (flac files, with cover-art saved as cover.jpeg)
they play fine on the ND5xs, but... I don't get to see the cover-art and with each track the artist/band name is displayed. (between tracknumber and tracktitle)
Aynyone else discovered this once or know what the problem/solution might be ?
Thanks in advance!
regards,
Alco
Hi Alco,
without knowing for sure, I would expect that cover art is not a foreseen feature during playback from a USB drive.
Remember that this is a streamer and playback from a USB stick is just an additional gimmick for the odd neighbour to come by and demonstrate his current favourite song.
Thank you PinkHamster,
Ok, that might explain the cover-art issue through USB.
It doesn't explain though why replay from USB-stick also show the artist/name when an album is selected. (it only happends with USB-replay, not when the same album is selected through UPNP)
For me the option of playback from a USB-drive is not a gimmick, but of the reasons to go for the ND5xs.
cheers,
Alco

Try .jpg and not .jpeg
I always use "folder.jpg" I am not sure that "cover.jpg" works.
The cover art should be named folder.jpg
That will fix it.
@Bart
I thought my cover-art was saved as .jpeg but I just notices it already was .jpg
@Harry,
I tried folder.jpg instead of cover.jpg but (tbh, as expected) it didn't make a difference.
It seems it's just not possible to see cover-art when playing music from a USB-stick.
Sorry Alco. I didn't read your OP properly. I'm using HDX for serving duties and shove occasional USB sticks into it - which display the cover art without problems. I don't plug USB sticks into the streamer.Sorry again. If you do find the solution I'm sure we will all be interested. I can't experiment with my NDS because it is presently back at the factory.
Alco, I have just checked an album (ripped in FLAC) that I have on USB and the artwork shows up on my iPad if I tap the "info" does that help?
No need to apologize, Harry. Every help is appreciated.
Hi Maccaa,
Yes, if I tap the little 'i' I also get a very tiny cover, but it's not the cover I saved to the map on the usb-drive. (also it's not always the right cover. Just a cover taken from the internet)
I guess it's just not possible to get the exact same info when playing music from a USB-stick, compared to UPNP, on the ND5xs.
edit: there's nothing about cover-art shown from USB-sticks in the online reference manual either, so that kinda confirms my thought.
A pity, but then again, hardly the end of the world either.
I got a mail this morning from fellow Dutch forum-member and ND5xs user, Fred.
To confuse things even more... on his ND5xs the info when playing music from USB-drive is exactly the same as when streaming the same album through UPNP. (so...with cover-art, and without artist-name before every tracktitle)
So,...it should be possible. weird...

Alco,
could it be that your USB files are not properly tagged? It all sounds like that you get the file name in your display, while Fred can see his tags. I also suppose that Fred has the album art embedded in his tags, which you probably don't.
Hi PinkHamster,
If the files I copïed to USB are not properly tagged, they should also not show up right when I play them through UPNP/streaming, or am I wrong ?
I have all the album cover-art embedded in my tags. (checked and mostly done with mp3tag)

Guys,.... I did some experimenting and solved the major issue.
This is how:
1. I just looked at one of the files that were copieed to a USB-stick.
2. Clicked on 'properties'
3. Clicked on 'change' ('Wijzigen' in Dutch)
4. Selected Windows Media Player, instead of the selected program Winamp.
I didn't expect it would make any difference at all, but...
Plugged the USB-stick back into the ND5xs and... yess... my Ipod now showed tracknumber + track title.
So, no more artistname between tracknumber and title.
There's only slight bummer left... after each tracktitle it now shows the audio extension.
So, like: 07 - Django's dream.flac
O,well...it's already an improvement, and I could live with that.
So, the missing cover-art is the only issue left now.
(btw, obviously I mostly listen through UPNP from my PC acting as a server, but I do like the option of playback through USB-drive on some occasions. That's whay I seem to care a bit more about it than most)
cheers,
Alco
I have the same problem: no cover art when playing from HD using USB. I store my music in iTunes (mac) and n-stream shows all the artists and albums but no cover art. Adding a folder.jpg image to a album folder doesn't make any difference. Is there a solution or is cover art not an option in n-stream?
You might be right. I'll ask NAIM about it.

NAIM says: Cover art is only displayed through UPnP
