Breathe (reprise)

Home, home again.
I like to be here when I can.
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire.
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

We all come and go unknown

Each so deep and superficial

Between the forceps and the stone

— Joni Mitchell, Hejira

If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn
They will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem.

— Leonard Cohen, Sisters Of Mercy

Life is sad, life is a bust
All you can do is do what you must

— Bob Dylan, Buckets Of Rain

Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

Make me an angel
That flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin'
Is just a hard way to go

— John Prine, Angel From Montgomery

I'm riding shotgun down the avalanche

She was just seventeen

You know what I mean

And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make

Yes, you can hardly ever go wrong with Joni, such as the lines from Amelia you quoted above. Everywhere you turn there are great lines such as these, even more apt today than when she wrote them over 40 years ago:

Who let the greedy in

And who left the needy out

Who made this salty soup

Tell him we're very hungry now

For a sweeter fare

In the cookie I read:

"Some get the gravy

And some get the gristle

Some get the marrow bone

And some get nothing

Though there's plenty to spare."

— Joni Mitchell, Banquet

If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts
You can never escape, you can only move south down the coast

She's got a sweet little asset
That can take her places
Where they don't recall names
But they remember faces
She knows how to use those feminine graces

She spends a lot of time
By the swimming pool
And if dancing was a brain disease
She'd be a dancing fool
And though she don't go to bed
On the first date as a rule...

It's the emphasis on the first syllable of last word of the first line that really makes it

I gave you a brand new ford
and you said "i want a Cadillac"
I bought you a ten dollar dinner
and you said "thanks for the snack"!
I let you live in my penthouse
you said it was just a shack!
I gave you seven children................... (Crescendo and pause for dramatic effect)
and now you wanna to give 'em back!

How Blue can you get, BB King

Always a great moment in concert.

I didn't want to post a whole song but I'll make an exception for this - an exquisite blend of mourning and hope

There's a blood red circle
On the cold dark ground
And the rain is falling down
The church door's
thrown open
I can hear the organ's song
But the congregation's gone
My city of ruins
My city of ruins

Now the sweet
bells of mercy
Drift through the
evening trees
Young men on the corner
Like scattered leaves,
The boarded up windows,
The empty streets
While my brother's
down on his knees
My city of ruins
My city of ruins

Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up!

Now there's tears
on the pillow
Darlin' where we slept
And you took my heart
when you left
Without your sweet kiss
My soul is lost, my friend
Tell me how do I begin again?
My city's in ruins
My city's in ruins

Now with these hands,
With these hands, With these hands,
With these hands, I pray Lord
With these hands, With these hands,
I pray for the strength, Lord
With these hands, With these hands,
I pray for the faith, Lord
With these hands, With these hands,
I pray for your love, Lord
With these hands, With these hands.
I pray for your faith, Lord
With these hands,
With these hands,
I pray for the
strength, Lord
With these hands,
With these hands.

Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up!

Favourite line :

"Everyone I used to know is either dead or in prison".

Favourite lines :

"They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy.

She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me...

 I can't help it if I'm lucky....."

My City of Ruins, Bruce Springsteen

He can be a bit polarizing among the masses.  And I seem to either love or dislike certain of his LPs.  But Bruce definitely can be passionate when he is not seemingly commercial.

Look down from in high places.
Lift off the ground
Without a sound, yeah.

We move through open spaces.
The wind, it pulls.
The sky gets close, yeah.

Could we get much higher?
Could we get much lighter?
Navigator to heaven.

Check out, did you check your heart?
This cloudless blue.
This starlight night, yeah.

Shoot out into the shining,
That devil moon. (That devil moon)
He sings of love, yeah.

Can we get much higher?
Can we get much lighter?
Navigator to heaven.

I love this track.

Joe

Agree with you re Springsteen and there's lots of his stuff I don't care for, but to deal with something as massive as 9/11 in the way he did on The Rising is an outstanding artistic achievement.

We're all here on this forum because music makes us feel better, so I'll finish with this - really needs Lowell's slide to go with it though........

Two degrees in be-bop, a PHD in swing
He's the master of rhythm he's a rock and roll king
If you like country with a boogie beat he's the man to meet (he's the man to meet)
If you like the sound of shufflin' feet he can't be beat (I say he can't be beat)
If you... If you wanna
If you wanna feel real nice, just ask the Rock and Roll doctor's advice
