Steam cleaners

Posted by: Kevin-W on 01 April 2013

Afternoon all!

I am looking to buy a steam cleaner - to clean kitchen, bathroom, upholstery, windows, floors, refresh carpets, mattresses etc.

I have between £100 to £150 to spend. Power and build quality, as well as cleaning power, are important here. I would rather buy a fairly basic (in terms of function) unit and update with accessories as I go along than buy a unit that claims to do everything.

I've been looking  at Karcher and Polti, but if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations based on personal experience, I'd love to hear them.

Cheers!

Hello Kevin

About 2 years ago i bought an all singing and dancing job from Alders in Croydon. In a nutshell wish i had saved my money. Found it OK if carpets are just a bit grubby, but if you have any serious staines it was useless. Been sitting in the garage ever since gathering dust.

Just piked up one of these from The Range £99 the wife seen it on one of the TV sales channels.

All plastic but seems well made and fairly light. She seems happy with it.

Hi Kevin,

Steam cleaners are great in principle but in our area of the country they aren't very practical as you have to use deionised water, our water is too hard. They very soon succumb to lime scale. We had a Polti and it didn't last that long. Luckily we bought it in Costco and could return it for a refund as it only had it about 10 months.

Kevin,

When I saw your topic title I thought you were going to ask about steam cleaners for vinyl records. Don't want to hi-jack your thread, but are they any use for this application?

If so, what brands are recommended?

If you want a few warped records Graham please feel free to try it and let us know how you get on.

That's why I was asking  Steve.

Saw this video and was curious if anyone had tried it.

There are some mad sods out in YouTube land. I could clean about 5 LPs in the time he takes to do one. The steam would kill all the bacteria, but then again so would the alcohol I use.

Back on topic, I bought a Polti steam cleaner from John Lewis a couple of years back.  It worked fine and now it doesn't.  Having read through reviews it's apparent that they have a very limited shelf life and work out to be a very expensive mistake.  No doubt London's hard water hasn't helped matters.

Unfortunately I don't have a recommendation of a make/ model which is likely to fit the criteria you set.
