Bang and Olufsen and Spotify (Naim reply would be apprechiated)
Posted by: Salvo on 03 April 2013
Hi,
Just read tat B&O has integrated Spotify into one of their expensive kits for native access and musi supply. Other firms are also doing it, namely Samsung...
How about us?

Solution: attach Macbook Pro to Naim streamer or Dac - load Spotify - play and enjoy.

... yes, and one could also buy a Sonos-thingy or something else ... but that's not the point here.
I for one would like to have something like Spotify integrated in my one-box-solution (SuperUniti) or in n-stream and avoid yet another power consuming box in the living room. And I would also be very interested in knowing, if Naim has any plans concerning the integration of such a solution (and if it would at all be possible to integrate it in the software or the hardware on Naims streaming products?).
Salvo and I are probably not the only ones who would welcome such an addition to the functionality of our streamers!

+1 for Spotify integration . Yes, I have a Sonos and use it for this purpose, but it would be nice to have one less box to plug in ... and explain the workings of to the wife!
Naim - put us out of our misery - is it still on the cards? If it isn't that would be a shame, but not the end of the world, and those who are currently Spotifyless could investigate the alternatives.
Unnecessary.
Is an Sonus or Apple TV that onerous?

How would you know the quality is not the same?
The quality of internet streaming from an atv is totally fine. Hook one up, you can even hide it. Behind the hifi stack. Now you have sonos, airplay and all the other things people simply cannot function in their lives without.

Tog, no, having the Sonos plugged into the NDX is no big deal - especially for me as I already have one. For those that don't it would be slightly annoying to spend the money if Naim then made the feature available on their (their = the customer's) existing streamer.
And garyi, as far as quality goes we can't know as there is nothing yet to compare - but surely it's not unreasonable to assume that Naim would make a better job than Sonos (in my case) even on 320kbps Spotify?
Not sure why the negativity to a perfectly reasonable question by the OP? If nothing else I assume that Naim takes such posts as customer research input even if they generally don't respond with their product roadmap.

Colour me slightly bemused at the presumption that Naim are in the same market as B&O and Samsung. I really don't understand how a Naim owner can think that loading up somebody else's software on their streamers would be a step forward. Doing so effectively makes it a computer, not a streamer, with all the problems that would bring.

Andy, I think I now understand the bemusement from some here - I had never looked into the details of how Linn does it, and incorrectly assumed it was "internal" to their streamer - this would appear not to be the case.
Apologies.
Salvo if you still don't follow the logic, it is not as simple as I (we?) had assumed - Linn's solution for example requires you to use your PC/Mac and they have an app that talks to the streamer.
Quite frankly Sonos plugged in to the NDX is the simplest route I can now see.

So there is something called a streamer that is not a computer, interesting, explain!
B&o incidently have just published negative earnings in the last quarter of 2012, probably not related to airplay.

Actually i woud strongly disagree that b&o and samsung are in the same market as naim, but i do accept that not having spotify is prevning me use a naim streamer
Weird.

Not true
Been listening to Spotify on my iPad all evening. 320kbps, no dropouts and excellent sound quality...
...using a $69 Bluetooth music receiver from Rocketfish (and a $129 optical cable from Wireworld) connected to my NDS's digital input.
Pairing is automatic, and destination selection is identical to using Airplay. All I do is pick the music reciever instead of the AE or ATV using the iPad's menu button. In this way, I avoid both the AE's constant dropouts, and the ATV's unnecessary upsampling to 16/48.
Just sayin'...
