NDX volume control

Posted by: Ralph Ho on 07 April 2013

Hi,

I linked my NDX with 282, and I notice there is volume control on n-Stream app. However, the volume control function  doesn't work. I still need to use traditional remote controller to control volume on 282. Couldn't NDX like Apple TV to adjust volume output by itself?

You need to use system automation. Read the sections 2.11 and 4.9 in the manual and act accordingly — that should help.

Hi Ralph

Setting up system automation also allows you to switch the 282s inputs with the NDXs nseve app.

Hi osprey and thebigfredc,

I link NDX to 282 with one stereo 3.5mm jack to phono plug cable, and the problem solved. Now I finally can control 282 with my i-devices. Thanks a lot.

This also works with a ND5 XS and 282, which is how I have it set.

Hi Ralph, yes the System Automation with the NDX is great controlling any of the Naim preamps. For example I can set the NDX to switch to my FM Tuner - which is is simply an analogue input change on the pre - but the display on the NDX says Tuner..

I also use this capability for controlling the NDAC specific inputs via the NDX automation to say SkyTV or AppleTV on the NDX display... nice. The NDX has two automation out sockets so you can do a Pre and the NDAC without needing a relay.

I've been using the n-stream app on an iPad to have my NDX control the volume on my 202 with no problems. I put a 282 in the place of the 202. Exact same cables and set up. Just put the 282 in place of the 202. The volume control buttons on n-stream do NOT control the 282. Take the very same cables and put em back on the 202 and all (volume control, mute, input selection) all works just fine. I read here on this topic where the system automation function on the NDX is supposed to control the 282 just like it does my 202. But no dice on this 282? This 282 an older unit. A 2004 vintage 282. Do all 282s work with NDX for system automation or just the newer 282s? Any ideas what the problem is here? I’m confident I have the settings on the NDX correct as it controls the newer (2013) 202 just fine.

Hi, I think Richard can comment best, but some of the older early 282s needed a Naim mod on the automation input to increase sensitivity. No issue with more recent or current 282 models however.

Might be best to contact Naim support directly on that one quoting the 282 serial number.

System automation (volume control) worked with my (ca. 2002) 202, and also works with the (ca. 2008) 282 I have now.

Thanks for the thoughts gentlemen. I'll follow up on this with naim service.

If it doesn't work it's probably the setup (automation) or the mini-jack to mini-jack cable you are using is faulty. Try to test it with a multimeter if you have one around. The first time I tried (between my ND5SX and Nait SX) it didn't work, because the mini-jack cable was shorted... thankfully, it didn't break any of the components. I went to a nearby supermarket, picked up another mini-jack to mini-jack cable for $1 and voila - it works as advertised Let's me annoy my wife from the other end of the flat by playing with the system volume in her room.

You are correct Simon. Chris West @ AV Options the naim USA service center confirms that early 282 will require a mod on the automation input in order for a naim streamer to control the 282 volume, mute etc. The current cost of this mod is $125 USD plus shipping fees.

I had an older 282 and did get automation to work, but it was a bit flacky. I believe the older models had a different voltage input and had to be coaxed into working with newer components. This meant waggling the the jacks around in the soockets and patience as it sometimes would start to work after an hour or so.

Does the need for this mod apply to early 252s as well?

What's the service wait at AV Options now? Last I heard (sometime last year) it was months to even get an RA to send a unit in.
