Margaret Thatcher 1925-2013
Posted by: Tony2011 on 08 April 2013
Loved or loathed, no denial, the woman was a force to be reckoned with.
RIP
Why don't the government put the funeral up for tender to the cheapest bidder who promises to sort it and then subs the work out for a few quid profit to a foreign contractor. Sell tickets and rake in a load of money which can be used to subside tax-cuts for middle england in order to buy the next election. It's what she would have wanted.
Interesting article on BBC website about what may have been if Mt was never elected. Nuanced commentary from someone who has researched the subject.
Public finance subsidising a private function?
Now there's a twist.
If we were given the day off I'd bl**dy well go into work anyway.

Margaret Thatcher died on the same date as Kurt Cobain.
Any parallels - I suspect Kurt spent more time on his hair.......
As per my previous posts i never liked the woman, BUT it appears to me that her 2 kids have not had a say as to how ,when and where their mother gets buried. Has the mob from number 10 just taken over and made all the decisions. Thats how its looks to me and that in my eyes is wrong.
Can any of you posters enlighten me on this ?

Mr mista, Yes the family are fully involved, I'm glad you are showing some compassion.
In this instance your eyes see what you want to see.
I agree Ian.
A lot of posts above remind me of;
Power To The People Comrade.
Steve, Wolfie Smith was nothing more than a petit-bourgeois interloper from Tooting.
The real revolutionary struggle was happening up the road, in Balham.
Bruce,
I don't thimk it is a State Funeral, I think its a Cerimonial Funeral with full Military Honours
Cheers
Don
OK. Still more than Ted Heath? Harold Wilson? Any other ex-PMs?
More than any other peace-time MP, yes.
I'm only stating facts, not expressing an opinion as to whether it's justified.
Cheers
Don
for those who are concerned that many are being so 'hurtful' or 'ugly' in making the comments that i and others have made following her death, I would like to be clear that i am not celebrating her death. And yes i have sympathy for her children losing their mother. But i am not going to be dragged into celebrating her life either. Her life and convictions damaged far too many for me to do that.

Ah yes! Compassion! The central tenet of the neo-liberal project, whose bounty we have all enjoyed these past 35 years.
Actually, this farrago of a funeral - cynically designed to bolster the Thatcher myth and which has been in planning for four years - will cost £8m, with the Thatcher family making an "unspecified" contribution, and the taxpayer footing the rest.
The event will probably attract protests and even trouble, so the bill will escalate if we factor in the policing and security costs.
Why it couldn't have been a private funeral, paid for by her family - as everyone else has to do - is beyond me. It's amazing how money can be found for some things and not others.
Dear Kevin,
"Why it couldn't have been a private funeral, paid for by her family - as everyone else has to do - is beyond me. It's amazing how money can be found for some things and not others."
Because, like it or lump it, she is respected by lots of us.
I'm sure there will be a little party you can attend in Brixton or some other bijou location.
PS: do your self a favour & stay off the racist accusations, you will make yourself look silly.
Well said mr green. In the 60's and 70's I spent time as auditor at many manufacturing companies and the general standard of management was abysmal. On top of this the unions had a confrontational approach and so the net result was decline. After the war many British companies took engineering equipment taken from the Germans as war reparations, while the Germans re-equipped, so that their engineering quality was superior. UK manufacturing suffered accordingly. Mrs T forced the country to face reality, but there were undeniably hardships as a consequence. Since she left office the Chinese have taken over as the world's manufacturer and that has made it more difficult for all but the very best UK manufacturers to compete on the world stage.
I would however submit that Heseltine's dash for gas, to eliminate the coal industry, was a mistake taking the longer view. We would be much better placed with a thriving coal mining sector provided either the green lobby could be overcome or clean coal technology could be made to work. The destruction of the coal industry was primarily caused by Scargill, who caused the government to decide that the risk of that industry bringing the country to its knees was too great.
Now we depend on foreigners to let us have the gas we need.
+ 1 I'm glad someone agrees with my sentiments people have selective memories in times like this. I’m 52 and was in my late teens during the winter of discontent and I remember well the power cuts, rubbish festering in the streets. The whole country was on strike grace diggers included, for goodness sake get a grip British Leyland was a joke. Ford went on strike at the drop of a hat Coal miners were over paid and Hitler (Scargill) ruled the country.
Yes Maggie did some things wrong don’t all politicians yes manufacturing suffered but in the time Maggie was in power, if and only if manufacturing had survived in the time it was only a stay of execution they would have gone anyway. Look where we are now nearly all manufacturing has gone to China.
I worked in manufacturing for 30 years and been made redundant several times.
Today we buy hi tec products British manufacturing was reluctant to change those that did not and make better quality products went under. British Leyland remember the cars they turned out ? Triumph motorcycles they were crap I have ridden motorcycles for 30 years they were shoddily made and unreliable.
Rover was another one why should a government pour millions into an ailing company they rested on their laurels thinking the threat would go away. They had an image of a quintessential old time car. In a fast changing world you have to keep moving forward and develop new products. Take a look at Naim perfect set up hi tec and fantastic quality.
I prefer cd players I don’t like streaming music but if Naim had just stuck with cd players would it still be a viable company today?
As I said earlier she did some wrong things in her time but she put the Great back into Britain

What racist accusations? Who did I call a racist?
That is a very serious charge - can you point out where I made racist accusations to anyone? Oh you can't. I suggest you withdraw that remark forthwith and apologise. Sharpish.
Where did I say that I was out celebrating? I will be working on the day of the funeral. I just happen to resent having to pay for it. I'm willing to bet that a good number of people feel similarly.
If you love her so much why don't you pay for it?
And, of course, you realise, don't you, that because it's a public funeral, paid for at least in part by the pubic, then some might say that public protest is legitimate. I expect there will be trouble and most seasoned observers won't be surprised if there is.
As I said earlier she did some wrong things in her time but she put the Great back into Britain
With her shrill declamations and abrasive personality, she certainly put the "grate" back into Britain...
I seem to recall a brief mention of the demise of Baroness Thatcher on 'BBC News 48' yesterday. It's like 'BBC News 24' but on twice as long.
John.
Folks, Please refrain from using language that may cause misunderstanding and seem offensive. Let's keep it clean and civilised just like Mrs T. would have wished. There are plenty of other forums where certain views can be expressed if you so desire. PLEASE KEEP IT CLEAN!
Thanks.

Well I am extremely unhappy about this idiot "dpgreen" making baseless accusations against me Tony. Perhaps, assuming he has the cojones, he would like to apologise.
Kevin, I understand your concern and I know you are very passionate about lots of subjects including this one. If you feel offended in any way please contact one of the moderators. I just do not want the post to be pulled altogether, as it happened in the past, because of members "different approaches" to the subject.

Tony, I shall reply in due course, I fully agree the subject should not be pulled.
However I would like to know why Kevin imagines my testicles* have any relevance to this discussion before I respond.
*Please accept my apologies if the translation was incorrect.
Are you pre-moderating Tony?
No need for it. This thread hasn't got anywhere close to racism yet.
I am sure the Iron Lady can take some beating, so she should, after all she gave out plenty of it in her lifetime. Anyone who can't stomach reality should go off on a fairy tale ride. All nice and cheerful there!
Just my two pence worth.

LOL,
TP, as you know passions run high around here on most subjects. It's all good and I wouldn't dream of keeping an eye on this lot 24/7. Just diffusing the situation, that's all that's needed.
We're all good people. Really!

All, except Maggie of course
Had she died twenty years ago I'd probably have been dancing in George Square with the rest but latterly all I saw was a pathetic old hag who could barely speak or stand unaided. I think all the partying is unnecessary and certainly undignified but I can't say I'm sorry to see the back of her. She destroyed communities and people's lives.
Amongst the very first people that Hitler and the Nazi's sent to the concentration camps were the trade union leaders. It was so they could fully bully and exploit the workforce, which they did.
Putting a good man of the people Arthur in Adolf’s jack boots only goes to show the little understanding of politics you have.
Thatcher, on the other hand was a particularly evil bitch who could happily of been a Nazi dictator.
I believe some in her own party described her as, “Hitler in heels”.
She was also a supporter of white supremacy and Apartheid in South Africa.
So she must have been one heck of a nasty racist too.
The only 'Great' Thatcher put back into Britain, was whopping Great salaries for her chosen few,
and Great suffering for far too many.
