Doors Perception DVD-A 96/24

Posted by: Dan43 on 11 April 2013

Just purchased this box set, and two things.

I don't have a dedicated DVD-A player so all the files default to 48/16, as I understand these are the files the player accesses if you do not have a true DVD-A player. Ayone know any workarounds for this?

Also I would like to rip the 96/24 files to WAV, I have already done this for other DVD-A but these Doors discs have some extra portection that AnyDVD and DVD-AE cannot work around.

Again anyone manage this?

Cheers

Hi Dan43

I have ripped the 24/96 from the Perception discs and I use DVD-AE, so I am unsure as to why you are experiencing problems.

Nevertheless, you could try DVDFab Passkey which will decrypt DVDs and Blu-ray and also has a 30 day trial period I think.

Hi Zepfan,

Its an odd one it only rips the first 5 seconds of each song. In the metadata I noticed something about being allowed only 1 copy, is it possible these discs have some copyright that after one rip they become locked?

I have AnyDVD running, which has helped other discs to unlock, but these are not happy at all?

Will try DVDfab passkey, I have DVDfab but it wont do anything beyond 44.1/16 it is pretty basic in its ouput options.

Thanks

PS : How do they sound .........

Hi Dan43

That does seem rather strange and I've never come across that sort of DRM on a disc before.  Perhaps someone else can chip in with their experience?

I've found DVDFab Passkey to work very well - basically it decrypts the disc automatically when you insert it in your drive which then enables the audio to be extracted by DVD AE.

Pleased with the sound of these, although IIRC they are remixes so may not appeal to everyone.

Hi Zepfan,

Just tried DVDFab Passkey and no joy there either, must be something else? These are from Ebay so either fleeced with Chinese copies or the discs have some one write only protection on them.

Well back to ebay they go,

Best

Sounds like dodgy discs to me.  Are you able to post a matrix number from one of the DVD-A discs and I'll compare it with mine.

I own the box set as well. I ripped the 24/96 audio using DVD Audio Explorer. It's freeware and can be downloaded.

You will probably need to convert the extracted wav files to your preferred format (I ripped to FLAC) and then you will need to retag them. MP3Tag is a great freeware application to do this

Good luck. Let us know if you succeeded

Moderated Post:  HR, I've removed the link because I'm not sure Naim would be so comfortable with it here on their forum - being DVD licensees and all that.  Indeed the whole subject of DVD ripping is a tricky one because it opens a whole pandoras box...

Well just put a fresh copy of DVD-AE onto an old laptop and the 96/24 files are ripping away nicely.

My main laptop has a lot of DVDFab and DVDFab passkey and AnyDvD protection removing software for DVD-A and Blu-Ray Audio also, which seems in this instance to have the complete opposite effect for The Doors DVDs.

With a clean install and none of that other stuff running DVD-AE clean all discs are ripping fine.

Go figure?

That's OK Richard. I understand the corporate stance that you have to take. I think that the question of ripping DVD-A discs is one of conscience. I purchased the 'Perception' box set by The Doors and apart from ripping the discs for replay via my DAC, I have no other means of accessing the higher resolution audio that I have paid for. I don't think people who have purchased the box set should feel an obligation to purchase the albums again to access higher resolution audio. Even if you wanted to buy them from HDtracks, you probably can't!

Hot Rats,

I tend to agree. From a recommendation here I purchased a Blu-Ray audio for a band I never heard off or would have, they got my business because of this forum.

Do we not have a right to rip our own CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray, the Rolling Stones BR-Audio is a great price also, £12 fro 50 hi-res songs, all 94/24, why wouldn't I wish to have this on my NAIM also to enjoy?
