Problem with nserve on ipad2 / iPad mini

Posted by: Ade on 12 April 2013

Hi, I was just wondering whether anyone has been having any problems with nserve on ipad2 / iPad mini, iOS 6.1.3 ( latest version of nserve ). Got a qnap ts-210 nas, nd5xs version 3.15.

I've had a couple of problems over the past few months. 1st problem is loosing music off the database. I've got approx 1800 CDs  from 400+ artists. Occasionally when running nserve, I will lose artists - in fact I will end up with 1 artist! ( the story's for some reason!) rebooting iPad, rebooting nd5xs dosnt make any difference. I can still choose music, browse the database and play music from the remote. Leaving it for several hours and nserve will start working again, only to drop out randomly later. Eventually it got to the stage the iPad app was useless. Odd thing is nserve on my iPhone 4S works fine, so I'm thinking the iPad app is bugged. I deleted the app, reinstalled it and its been fine for the last 6 weeks.

Then, a couple of nights ago, I tried to play some tangerine dream, hyperborea. Selected it, but nothing happened - checked the display, and it said " track skipped - unable to play" for the whole cd. I tried other tangerine dream CDs, same thing. Everything else played ok. Then tonight, I had the same problem with everything past "r" in the artist list. At this point I'm starting to panic the nas is going down. Just out of curiosity, I tried tangerine dream from my iPhone - works perfectly!

I've just deleted the iPad nserve and reinstalled it, now works fine. This has happened since iOS 6 - on an iPad2 16gb wifi and a new iPad mini 16gb wifi. As I've already said, iPhone 4S has not been affected.

I do listen to a lot of music, probably 4+ albums a day. It's almost as if the iPad app is hogging loads of memory and getting confused - seems to be fine for a while, then starts playing up.

Has anyone else had any odd experiences with the iPad app? Any ideas on possible solutions?

Cheers

No problems here with n-Serve on my iPad2 and HDX. BTW, I always thought that with ND5XS the n-Stream app should be used?

Doh! I meant nstream, not nserve... As I said, it seams to be a cumulative problem. I've tried restarting nas , router and nd5 xs - the only thing that clears the problem is reinstalling nstream. Never had the problem on my iPhone - hence the question

Hi Ade,

I'm using n-Stream on an iPad 3, OS v 6. I have had similar problems, but only when streaming wirelessly from the UnitiServe to the UnitiLite. Hardwiring solved all issues.

Is your system hardwired?

Yeah, everything's hard wired, only wireless bit is the iPad... All seems to be working ok now after nstream reinstall, will see how long it lasts...

Is the ip of you nas fixed and what router do you use? Is there a switch in the mix?

Latest version of NServe (2.5) is a bit flakey, I've emailed Naim about it with no reply. I deleted it and installed version 2.4 and all has been well.

Don't have any feedback on this at all, will check Paul

i,ve been running 2.5 for some time now (since its release) and have had no issues at all with it

Could be just my IPad! Although I have been able to replicate the behaviour moving from 2.4 to 2.5. Version 2.4 seems solid. When I update to 2.5 the Nserve will frequently lose the unitiserve and the "discovering" text will show and frequently will report that no servers are found. When music is playing the timing will regularly freeze and fade and then come back to life again.

I'm using an IPad 2 with the latest version of IOS. With version 2.4 of NServe I don't have any problems at all.

Tim,

Thats a strange one. Never experienced it here. I must admit my n serve is on an ipad 1 and an iphone 3, but no issues.

The description sounds like a network issue, but you seen ok with 2.4 so not that.

Maybe try nserve on the phone ( if you use an iphone) and see how that performs ?

Might help narrow it down to either the ipad or the actual nserve

Hi guys,

seems like two different issues are being discussed here!

ade (n-stream),

i wonder if this could be an issue to do with disk space, to you generally have your iPads full to the brim or is the some spare disk space (settings > general usage). this might help us track down the problem.

tim (n-serve),

I've not seen your email yet. I the meantime I wonder if setting the server IP address manually in n-serve rather than auto helps. Also, what version software is your uniti serve on

Tj - I've got 6.7gb free on iPad mini, 8gb free on ipad2. One of the 1st things I checked ! It seems like its getting full from the way nstream behaves. Killing the app dosnt make any difference, but deleting it and reinstalling brings it back. Cheers mate Ade

Hello TJ:

I have version 1.6D on the Unitiserve. If it's any help it also exhibits the same issues on my wifes IPad, version 2 IPad latest IOS.

Have since removed NServe  from wifes IPad, just did it as a test.

Ade, does this happen with auto connect disabled? And always connect enabled?

It does sound like it could be network related.. Such as multicast discovery not getting received properly.. Perhaps... What wifi fo you use? I do find an Apple Airport express is superb with broadcast and multicast data (used by AirPlay and uPNP).. It works far better for this application than the wireless on my Cisco 870 !!

I now have version 2.5 on my Iphone and it is very crisp, fraction of a second to locate the Unitiserve. Will keep trying this instead of iPad to see how it performs.

Seemed to figure out a fix - "clear upnp cache" in the settings sorted it. Nstream went down again yesterday, it wouldn't allow anything to played beyond "T" in the artist list. Cleared the cache, and it's working fine again. Definatley seems the problem is memory - got lots of free space on iPad, but seems to have an issue with the library - have got 400gb of flac files on the nas drive. Just had a thought - I never look at the info ( cover art, reviews etc) on my iPhone, but do on my iPad. iPhone never has problems, just on the iPad. Maybe this is the issue?

Doubt the nas file size is an issue.

I have a nas with 4 Tb of music and no issue.
