Issue with QNAP and UnitiServe

Posted by: PeterHa on 15 April 2013

I do see a strange behavior and I do not understand the problem. Hope somebody can help.

I have moved from a low end NAS zu QNAP TS-469L. I do need more space (not only for music files).

The old NAS has shown the shares and I was able to connect to the MUSIC share which contains additional downloaded FLAC files. In addtion I did a backup from my UnitiServe to the same NAS. (And yes, I do a backup of my NAS to an external HD.) This worked by connecting to a share and promote it as backup share.

Now with the new NAS, I do not see the shares with the UnitiServe I have promoted on my NAS. But they can be seen by Windows PC's and Mac's. So I have added the backup share manually. That works fine but I am not able to use it as my backup share. The button in n-Serve is grey and connected to the webinterface Unitserve said no share online. The funny thing is that I do see the share aktive and online in the web interface and it is empty.

Second issue is that I am now no longer able to connect to my Music share. "A connection with different user name and password already exists." Yes, sure but to a different share.

The target is to have access to my Music share on my new NAS and to use a different share on the same NAS as my backup share for the UnitiServe.

Cheking the NAS there is only one user attached. The backup user.

Any idea how to get more information what the issue is? Why is the UnitiServe not able to activate an already linked online and active share as it's backup share? Why is the UnitiServe not allowing a second connection to the same NAS but to a different share with different username and password?

Thanks in advance

Did you remove the shares from the old nas with the dtc or n-serve if possible. On the dtc it has an anoying habit of remembering hsares even when they are not on the network anymore.

If the old shares are still in the list of shares you need to first ignore the share, then you are asked if you want to ignore the share or all shares on the host, and you are back in the list of shares with the shares you ignored still in the list. Now you have to delete the shares you have ignored.

This should prevent the server from discovering the shares and maybe solve your problems.

I have made two changes in my NAS.

- Changed the Workgroup name to Workgroup

- enabled the local master browser

Both are for Windows networks but suddenly all shares appeared in n-serve and the web based GUI.

Crazy. I thought UnitiServe is a Linux based system .....

After disabling the backup share the button Backup was enabled. Also strange.

That gives me the possibility to use my backup share as requested.

The last open point was to link my Music share to the UnitiServe. It was not possible (so far) to use a different user name and password, but I have changed the user right in my NAS.

At the end it is now working in the way I need it. But it is funny that I have to enable Windows services to get a linux share connected .....

Thanks for you fast reply.

As far as I know all Naim servers are based on a special Windows XP version, with modifications made by Naim. I know all the ns/hdx servers and the Userve runs on the same firmware modified for each model of the servers.

It seems that the way Naims UPNP server, handles shares is to always find any active share on the network, not even the ignore and remove method stops my online shares to reappear a few minutes later. The shares that are not online that I ignored and removed at least has not shown up again. Maybe I should ask support if this is how it should be.

Searching the forum, your mail has helped me tremendously! The same two changes in my NAS solved my problem of not finding any share!

Had been working on that unsuccessfully since a couple of evenings...

Thank you, even if quite late!
