UnitiQute and NAS

Posted by: Ando on 17 April 2013

Currently I dont have a have a home network. Can a NAS be connected via ethernet cable directly to  a UnitiQute ?

If not and I need to set up a network is there any particular specification needed for the router ?

Thanks Mike

There are better network-experts than I, here on the Forum, but I would want to run a basic domestic wired router to play traffic cop, just for the ease of it.  No need to interface with the Internet, or do wi-fi, unless you require.  Keep it as simple, and function-specific as possible.

Most basic routers have four ports for four wired networked devices.  You can add switches to expand, if four ports is not enough.

Eliminating the router is possible, but you will struggle to find support for going that route, because each device will have to be manually configured without one, and each device has a slightly different interface.  If you weren't asking the question in the first place, I'd say give it a try.    To me, doing without a router seems a false economy.

Good luck,

Nick

Mike, do you have internet access at home at all?  If so, not putting your 'music' on a network does deprive you of some of the benefits, such as use of the Rovi database with nStream.

Now that you own hi fi equipment meant to be networked, now is a good time to learn the little bit you need to know to put together a home network and get it running as intended.

All you need is some understanding of IP addressing, a PC to set up the NAS and a crossover Ethernet cable. Set up the NAS, set up the Cute, connect them with the cable and you are ready to go.

Before I forget, you have to run software on the NAS like Twonky Media or Logitech server.

But no n-stream control this way. Aah, keeps you healthy ... running up and down ...

You don't mean to say that you were posting from your PC at work, now do you?

@PinkHamster

It will work with the remote as well. But I agree, set up a router for wireless is far better.

With the extra cost of a smartphone or tablet too.

Thanks everyone for the replies.  My internet connection is via a device that provides  wireless connection to the internet and then wireless connection to my computer etc but doesnt have the ability to connect in any other way.

I want to connect the UnitiQute to the NAS via wire and on the basis of your advice this would seem easiest done via a router. As the Rovi database and n-stream control are significant attractions I will have to either rethink my internet connection ( not easy at all ) or find a way to link my internet connection to my new router.

Cheers Mike

If your internet connection is from a usb type wireless adapter there are routers available that can utilize that for your internet connection and you get a home network to share your internet connection.

Thanks Hudsy, I am currently looking for such a router.

Maybe a quick call to your internet provider will get the USB device swapped for a (wireless + wired) router...  for free ?

(or isn't it that simple for you?... not sure where your are Ando, so not sure what's 'normal' for providers in your area... but must be worth a try. After all, routers these days are so simple to install    )
