Clearing cache in n-stream (everytime I start n-stream)

Posted by: Alco on 18 April 2013

Hi guys,

I've had several problems over the past 3,5 weeks when controlling my new ND5xs through n-stream.

First I missed a lot of cover-art. That seems so have been solved now!   (partly without knowing how/why though)

My main frustration that's left now is the following:

Eveytime I wanna listen to some music and therefor select n-stream on my Ipod, I first have to go to the settings screen to clear the cache.

It I don't do that I get these big empty spaces, when browsing through artist, A-Z (I hope y'all understand what I mean, as English is not my native language)

If I don't clear cache everytime first the alphabet begins with 'D'. (so all artist starting from A to C are missing!)

Another example: let's say I have only 1 artist starting with an 'O'. If all works fine n-stream would/should show only 1 line with the name of the artist/band. Now, it often shows say >10 lines, with the artists name on line 1, and the other 9 lines are blanc.  Quite annoying imho.

Does anyone know what may cause or solve this ?

thanks in advance.

best regards,

Alco

I've noticed this too, at least at the start of the A-Z.  I'll try to have a closer look this evening.  I'll try clearing the cache as you suggest.  No solution though!

What is your UPnP server?

Are you brwsoing by Artist or Album, or through the File node?

What happens if you wait for a little while when viewing a page with "gaps"? Do they fil in? I have noticed when brwosing through the File route that lags can occur giving the result you see.

Thanks Gavin.

@Ian:

I'm using LMS (Logitech Media Server) as a server.

I tried several, (Asset, Twonky, LMS) but prefer LMS.

I'm mostly browsing by Artist. (sometimes Genre. Never by album though)

I haven't tried waiting for a little while viewing a page with 'gaps'.  Will try later. Thanks.

I tried waiting a while while viewing the 'artist' screen with the blank gaps.
Unfortunately it didn't work.

It seems to happen more often now than before. Sometimes also when I listen to music and want to go back to the artist screen, to select another artist/album...
Then the alphabet starts with D again and most characters have many blank lined underneat them.

I forgot the most obvious question - have you set UPnP compatibility on in the n-Stream settings?

Hi Ian,

Yes, I have set UPnP compatibility on in n-Stream settings.

Btw, I just visited my dealer and we discussed my issues with the ND5xs.

I have to admit that I might have been a bit too impatient from the beginning!
My dealer would've been more than happy to help me with my issues, but he didn't even know about it
As the first issues happend on a Sunday I just thought, "let's try the Naim forum first to see if I can find things out myself".  (thinking it'd probably be solved with the very same day)

That way I wouldn't have to ask my dealer to come over again.

Still,...in the end, besides the issues I encountered in n-stream I also prefer the simplicity, bigger cover-art and ease of use of Ipeng app over the n-stream app.

My dealer and I discussed some possible trade options. One of these options my dealer proposed is trading my ND5xs for the new DAC-V1 & NAP100 combo.

That way I can still use my beloved SB Touch and control it with the Ipeng app and still enjoy the Naim sound.

At first I didn't like the looks of the DAC-V1 that much, but overtime it became more attractive.

So, within a few weeks time I might be able to tell my findings of the DAC V-1 + NAP100.

(and how it compares to the Nait XS + ND5xs sonically)

The other proposal my dealer offered I'd like to keep secret at this moment.

(it'll be auditioned at the same time my dealer is bringing in the DAC-V1 & NAP100)

So, the ND5xs will go back to the store, but (as always) my dealer offered some very interesting alternatives/trade-in options!

regards,

Alco

So Alco, did you resolve the problems with n-stream? I'm experiencing similar issues.

Hi Pixies,

Well,....just this morning I did try the following:

When these blanc gaps appear I just ticked on an artist name. (randomly) and then go back to artist again. This takes about 5 seconds and... it did the trick.
The gaps where gone and everything was the way it should.

I tried this about 8 times in a row, and it worked!

Thanks Alco.

Glad to hear you can resolve the problem and I will try this. However its a shame that as yet we have no solution to the fundamental issue. I also use Logitech Media Server, with ND5XS, which may be the link! Maybe some expert on the forum will enlighten us?

Well, I promised I would look at the issue I was having...and two months later I've finally got round to it.

I believe I've identified why I was getting blank artists at the top of my list in nStream.  They were just single songs from albums, and I think it was because the Artist Name had strange characters in it - for example the umlauts over the o in Bjork etc.

I've simplified the text to take out accents etc. - I just need to reconvert them onto my server.

I've no idea whether this is an issue with my upnp server software or nStream.

Alco, I used twonky on my qnap which caused issues similar to your experience. I installed minim server on the qnap since then no issues period. Also minim can transcode flac to wav on the qnap which gives a small but nice lift in performance. Maybe worth checking if minim server is supported on your Logitech server.

cheers
