How do you tag classical music?

Hello classical enthusiasts,

I just bought Der Ring des Nibelungen and startet to rip the cds.

I rip my cds with xld and also have metadatics to edit the tags.

Now my question is, how do you bring in all the artists in your metadata?

I understand what is the composer, but in which fields do I have to put in the orchestra, the vocal artists and so on? Do you put all these in the comments tag?

Sorry if this sounds a little bit confused...

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, comments.

Forget the list of artists, just put in the conductor. The list will be so long in the artist's column that you will never ever bother to read it.

If you get really interested in who this or that person is [and it is not really interesting if one is listening to the music] then go back to the original CD release and make a note of it.

In iTunes I have been through and almost completely removed artist references, working on the principle that the conductor is the leading artist in any given performance.

For example I have the wonderful Glyndebourne recording of Don Giovanni, which now stands as being performed by Fritz Busch. Similarly my Glyndebourne recording of Figaro is performed by Vittorio Gui.

I actually can recall most of the singing casts in both cases, but honestly, they are either fine or not. If not get a different recording.

Thank you Farmer for your advice. Seems that I could not see the wood for the trees. :-) Ralf
