iRadio on NDX Doesn't Work

Posted by: TJSTAR on 23 April 2013

Hi, I am new to NAim equipment as I finally took the plunge and secummed to the promise of being able to have al lmy music at my fingertips and bought an NDX streamer with my hard earned cash.

As much as I am in heaven with my Flacs being plaend through my new toy, I am completely unable to get anything from the iRadio. All I get on the display is "initialising".

I have a VirginMedia Hub connected via Cat 6 cable directly into the NDX.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Look up.  Literally   See the 'sticky' topic addressed to VirginMedia users, that discusses iRadio problems?  That's you

Hi BArt,

I think I get it. I need to speak to Virgin to get another router to get my iradio to work...

No, you need to goto the internet and purchase a router yourself, virgin will just give you another shit superhub.

purchase an asus rtn56u. On the hub you gon switch it to modem only mode. Do that.

plug the new router into it with ethernet.

connect your devices to the new router.

Ahh ok thank you Gary...much appreciated. I'll google that router and see what it's going for. Oh just a quick question then; Why do I need to piggy back it with the Virginmedia Hub? Won't it just work on it's own?

The SuperHub still acts as the cable modem.

Thank you so much for your reply. Sorry what does that mean that it's a "cable modem"? Is it different therefore than a normal router? Sorry if that's a dumb question.

The superhub is essentially two components; a cable modem and a router combined in one unit. Before the superhub these were two separate items, so the router was easily swappable. In their wisdom VM combined the two functions in to a single box.

If I remember correctly, the early SH firmware didn't allow for 'modem only' use, but it was introduced later on, so now we again have the ability to use the SH for modem duties only and employ a proper router that actually works.

You don't need to worry about it but you will need both the SH and a router.

In short to communicate with the internet there you have to have a modem.

A router is a different thing but typically they are combined so if you walk into currys or what ever there will be ADSL/Routers

the ADSL bit is the modem (sort of) and the router is the router.

You have the modem, its the superturd. As a modem its fine, as a router its terrible. So let it be just a modem and you get a decent router. Anything by draytek or Asus will do you. But get a router not an ADSL/Router or DSL/Router

asus rtn65u or rtn66u are superb routers, I have both, some of the fastest throughput available today and never fall over in my experience.

Thank you so much Steve and Gary for your detailed replies. This really gives me guidance now.

I'm now off to scrounge some cash from Virgin for this as I feel there is some justification here due to their hub not doing what it says on the tin. Hmmm I wonder if anyone else has had any success with this?

Much appreciated,

Trev...

Hi Trevor,

I had the same problem months ago when I upgraded my Virgin Media package and got the new Superhub.

After a few e-mails/calls to Virgin and sending them the internet link for the Naim sticky they finally sent me a router. It's worked seamlessly since.

Good luck.....

Trev just in case it's not clear -- you will have to go into the setup software for the VM device and disable its router function.  (I'm not writing from first-hand experience, just trying to be helpful in case what you read in this thread doesn't make that explicit   )

There are plenty of folks here from the UK that have done this; no worries!

Great thank you Bart,...Oh and Virgin have now said they will knock £50.00 off my next bill to pay for a router. They said that they don't have any in stock to send out!!!

...Well they've made me about 23 promises over the last 18 moths which they have failed to keep, so fingers crossed on this one

They were if you really kicked off giving out a couple of the old vg30 (or similar name) but typically they are out of stock of them.

50 quid practically gets you an RTN56u. Do not skimp on the router, you have a multi thousand pound hifi device that needs a good router.

Why would streaming with an NDX not work via the superhub when it does via an appletv? I stream from itunes Match fine and I'm pretty certain radio works too. What is the NDX doing differently?

I use mine in router mode ok. Wireless is fine once you alter the settings away from VM's recommended default which is unreliable and useless.

Posted on: 26 April 2013 by garyi

To be frank its not the NDX at fault, the superturd is useless for a whole host of things, including one month a couple of attempts from china to enter my house as I was being publicly broadcast via it. (they gave me a free months service for that one)

Seriously until you try a proper router on the end of a virgin line you have no idea what its capable of. An RTN56u is 60 quid, buy one.

Gary, I'm definately going to buy one just as soon as I get paid ha ha...or more to the point as soon as I know for sure that Virgin have credited me...I can but hope

Oh and Srichards, in the meantime, out of interest, I would be really keen to know what settings you have the more aptly named Superturd on to make it more reliable?

Jon, thank you for your reply too, I would love to know how to find that naim sticky thread you mention and have a bit of a read of that too. I've tried searching all sorts but can't find it? Could you possibly point me in the right direction?

Well. The out of the box settings are appalling and it's a door stop. Admin interface kept disappearing, wired connections didn't work reliably. Wireless ones just dropped when you went back to them. Useless.

I changed it to use 5ghz (all mine are N devices) and changed security from auto to WPA-PSK (aes) I also stopped it piddling about jumping wireless channels. As far as I can tell if you do the same with setting it to 2.4GHZ it's also ok. It's the compatibility bits with older b & g devices that is the issue. There's also an advanced setting to turn that compatibility off altogether. Called something weird like greenfield.

I pretty much think it is the security setting which is the crux of the problem I vaguely remember meddling with my old netgear router and changing it to that as my macbook had endless problems with that. Older imac was perfect.

In the advance wireless settings you can set the throughput. I have 300mb but without the compatibility rubbish and speed reduction on as both seem to cause slowness even where there is literally no-one using the same wireless channel.

It's been fine once fixing wireless channel and stopping the security mode switching. All the issues with the admin interface going away have also resolved.

The less choice you give it about what it can do, the better it seems to behave!

Oh thank you for such a lovely long reply. I'll give some of those changes you suggest a bash and see what happens

Can't remember if I said this on another thread, but I got rid of my Virgin Hub and lo and behold I radio worked.

BTW I wouldn't advise forcing the wifi radio to stay on a fixed channel. It is best to let it go on Auto so as to remove future headaches. If the wifi router ceases to work when letting it go auto, it sounds like it is faulty or you have some specific interference near your receiver that your wifi AP can't hear..

Thanks Simon..No problems now I switched to BT from Virgin. The problem simply lay with the Virgin hub. Many other NDX users have had this problem with Virgin...

From my experience their customer service is appalling which didn't help matters.

Trev, glad you got it sorted with your switch to BT. I hear the later BT Homehubs are quite improved on earlier incarnations.
