Janos Starker RIP

This was one amazing cellist.  I remember seeing him play with NZSO, such a silken tone. For an obit see http://www.guardian.co.uk/musi...may/01/janos-starker

It is Brahms Trios tonight with Suk and Katchen.

When I was running a vinyl only system, I found his first recording of the Bach Cello pieces on the Mercury Living Presence at my local library. It was *quite* obvious from the first few notes why there was all the fuss surrounding the 'plum label' Mercury LPs. Splendid performance and superlative sound quality.

It is always sad to learn that one of the musical greats has left us. Starker had a long and productive life though and left us an outstanding recorded legacy.

Starker might very well be my favorite cellist. My wife is learning cello and we have a lot of his recordings.  He was a great man, too, and taught a lot of great cellists.

This was my first Janos Starker LP and still looks and plays like new.  Many more have joined it since, including the recent purchase of the SC reissue of the Mercury Living Presence Bach Suites, which is lovely and one of the best I've had from Speaker's Corner.

He was first Cello in the Chicago Symphony in the years of Fritz Reiner (1953 - 1963), and can be heard in a few solos. He can be recognized by the tight vibrato and the perfect intonation...

A great cellist,

yes.
