Qobuz Rush 24Bit

Posted by: Harry on 03 May 2013

Rush are well served on the 24Bit front and I must say that I haven’t yet found a transfer I don’t like greatly.

Qobuz have announced an extensive 24Bit pre-release Rush listing which includes Permanent Waves and Power Windows – two of my remaining three Rush album wants. Only Counterparts to go, and this will surely come as it’s already on SACD.

It’s also nice to see that Signals will shortly be available for download in 24Bit because the only way to obtain this at present is to buy the whole of the Sector box set that accompanies it. And it’s not a very good box set at all. Fly By Night and A Farewell To Kings are also locked into the other Sector box sets but if Signals has escaped then the others will be along.

Qobuz won’t sell me stuff but someone in the UK will take this up. Linn I expect.

Will do. My brother is a Rush 'freak' so I'll make sure to post if I hear anything from him via his sources.

You can get 24 bit 2112 on the Linn website

Posted on: 04 May 2013 by Harry

Indeed you can. Although for £6 less you can buy it on DVD-A as part of a box set.

£14 for the remastered CD+ DVD-A with a booklet from Amazon.

£17 from Hiresaudio.

£20 from Linn.

Ouch!

Back catalogue on HD Tracks here in USA. About $35USD for each of the Sector "boxes" and then albums from '89 to '07 are available as group for about $79.
Ok. I'll byte.

The sector boxes are well priced on HDTracks but the won't sell them to the UK. And they duplicate some 24Bit albums that are already available. Hopefully they will split the albums out soon.

One interesting thing for me about the '89-'07 is that Counterparts has made it onto PCM. That's the only albim from that set I'd buy in 24Bit and the one remaining title on my want list.

Linn are overcharging as usual. Hopefully Qobuz will offer Counterparts as a stand alone soon. I'd even pay Linn the extra for the one album if necessary.

So one to go for me and I expect it will be along soon.

Thanks Harry,

I'll keep an eye out for the Qobuz ones. Hopefully the quality is top-notch.

I am admittedly listening through a bedding in system with two DR’d PSs, which is to say that my reference point is not settled. But I don’t need much of an excuse to listen to Permanent Waves twice in an evening and I was happy to play the MFSL Gold CD back to back and variously intermixed with the recently released 24Bit offering.

They are essentially the same. To my ears the 24Bit, in a similar fashion to Power Windows, seems to make the staging more transparent, allowing vocals, vocal effects and instruments to express themselves with more clarity and accuracy. I did hear a few little bass flourishes on Natural Science which I could not easily pick out on the CD and the squelching on the vocals was somewhat more stand out, although not distracting.

I’d say you can’t lose either way but I’ll take the 24Bit offering. Waves was originally mastered by a dog with normal hearing above 20KHz and the at times splashy presentation is preserved. The good news is that it isn’t heightened and the overall sound balance hasn’t been fiddled with – in so far as I can tell with these ears.

I’m going to the 24Bit Yes next.

Nice to see Dreamboat Annie out this week on HDTracks. Not that I can buy it!

Thanks for the review Harry.

Good to know that the 24bit has been done OK.

Ill have a dabble myself once Ive got the 'release' from Qobuz.

ps. nice customer service write up in other thread - fascinating stuff.

Thanks Chris. Appreciate your comments.

HD Tracks has the 1989-2007 albums which are not on Quobuz or Linn Records yet. Presumably, Vapor Trails will have all that clipping and distortion in high resolution, unless they've finally remastered it?

They say that remastering VT is on the to do list but I bet it will still be brick walled.

In a moment of weakness I checked if I could get the later era box set (although the only one I really really want is Counterparts). Same old. Can't supply to UK. I expect Linn or Qobuz will get them at some point, hopefully as individual albums.

I had a go on Hemispheres 24Bit. Just side one. I could hear the bass more clearly (tuneful and not lumpy) but this could be the DR effect. I will have to investigate further.
