Alternatives to UnitiLite?

Posted by: hafler3o on 05 May 2013

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on similar (functionally) alternatives to the UnitiLite from other companies. I ask as I have just had a VERY nasty experience with a replacement unit a mere 24hrs after returning the 1st faulty one. I don't want to go into the details as no-one at Naim has yet contacted me with regards the second unit.

I bought Naim as it looks and sounds beautiful (to my eyes and ears at least), oozes class and I also wanted to support UK (and local to myself) business. Unfortunately I might have to look elsewhere now but I was disappointed to find (the Scottish Company) no longer seem to make anything that plays CD.

Any alternative brand / model must have uPnP / CD and digital inputs, and act at the very least as a pre-amp. Thoughts anyone?

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience! Persevere! I'm sure NAim will respond soon enough. There is no other all in one system that sounds as good as the Uniti range.

Thanks for that, it's a comfort and a worry at the same time that I've got the "worst of the best"!

In 47 years of owning hi-fi from Garrard to  Krell, I've never had anything go wrong, ever. The first piece of Naim kit I've owned and I get two deaths in a month. At least the first UnitiLite expired quietly.

There are several alternatives but I guess we're not allowed to mention them

Hafler, sorry to hear that, would you please email at naim, I would like to look into this. I need retailer name and exactly the faults you experienced on both items.

Hello Paul,

I emailed support@naimaudio.com and marked it for the attention of Steve Hopkins Saturday evening (approx 9pm). With the B/H weekend I didn't expect any response until Tuesday.

I had phoned the dealer (Audio-T in Portsmouth) just before closing time Saturday, I also backed the conversation up with an e-mail to Audio-T, as requested by them, outlining the experience.

I don't have an e-mail for you but I can copy/paste the message I sent to Steve H. if you want.

I don't think forum rules prohibit mentioning other brands (as long as it's not a power supply). I've not found any real alternative to the UnitiLite. To which devices are you referring? (one that combines the CD, streamer, DAC, and integrated amp functions into one unit).

Thanks,

Jan

Hi Jan,

I'm thinking of anything that can cover the 'source' bases already covered by the Naim. Of course I've not been thinking very long and the Naim 'all-in-one' music solutions are made for people like me, people who like music but not hanging around in dealerships pondering, and I also want to get my wife 'into' into an 'our music / our system / as easy to-use as falling off a log' mindset. It's amazing how tolerable someone else's music choices are when it's played on a cultured set-up ie. mine (something that wasn't happening before!)

Last night I realised I had a perfectly good CD player with s/pdif dig. output sitting right in front of me (the Blu-ray player!) which means I don't really need CD playing ability at all, just a way of stopping the Blu-ray turning on the television when playing a CD, which I'm sure is somewhere in the on-line manual.

So in essence any 'solution' anyone can think of is appreciated as I'd not been following technology trends in music for some time before my purchase. I need my thinking cap on just to make good sense of Naim's range of product, let alone trying to compare and contrast function, performance and value with anyone else.

If you don't need a CD drive then a Superuniti would be a great solution. Excellent in every way and no reliability problems that I have heard of - very many satisfied owners on here!

Superuniti looks great, only trouble is it's double the price  Any ideas when that product was introduced?

I guess the most obvious non-Naim alternatives are the Arcam Solo Neo or a Cyrus Streamline2 + CD Transport (which takes up the same space, though it's two half-width boxes). Obviously the sound you get and operability/functionality are other matters.

If you don't need CD though and want to stick with Naim,, the UnitiQute punches well above it's weight and price. You don't see many Superunitis and they seem to go for about £2500, having only come to market right at the end of 2011. I own both.

Don't tempt me with punches the mood I'm in! I think you are right though, unless clouds part and a big (index) finger descends it's the Qute or nothing...

JEN Another good reason for Naim to reprint their caps They help to concentrate to better figure out product's differences and features...

Something lost there in translation Manu... Reprint their caps

Any update on this and whether you are going to stick with the Uniti or not?

That is good, glad to hear you are getting something sorted

in that case, can naim cut down on french cuisine and go back to steak and kidney?

a uniti lite that goes out with a bang is not the kind of cross border fertilization that we expect.

unacceptable. completely utterly unacceptable.

very shocked that instead of making damn sure the 3rd uniti lite was flawless, naim chose to sell a dac v1/nap instead.

what a retreat. what a failure.
