Alternatives to UnitiLite?

Posted by: hafler3o on 05 May 2013

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on similar (functionally) alternatives to the UnitiLite from other companies. I ask as I have just had a VERY nasty experience with a replacement unit a mere 24hrs after returning the 1st faulty one. I don't want to go into the details as no-one at Naim has yet contacted me with regards the second unit.

I bought Naim as it looks and sounds beautiful (to my eyes and ears at least), oozes class and I also wanted to support UK (and local to myself) business. Unfortunately I might have to look elsewhere now but I was disappointed to find (the Scottish Company) no longer seem to make anything that plays CD.

Any alternative brand / model must have uPnP / CD and digital inputs, and act at the very least as a pre-amp. Thoughts anyone?

what a retreat. what a failure.

I'm impressed that you where party to the conversation.

Obviously thats how you're able to state that with such confidence.

To be fair to Naim that was not an option as my wife would most certainly have never gone near it.

All other matters are currently 'in flux', so for the moment I'll keep my opinions under wraps and my ears open...

mr portly.

where you are impressed or unimpressed is hugely irrelevant and completely besides the point. if that was your 2 cents, then please accept this as my one cent with apology and no extra tips.

suggest you read the thread *(again) and understand the real issue here.

I am not the problem.

a naim blowing up is very alarming news. Can naim please explain??

I was just contemplating buying a HR DR for my 202 and NDAC and now I need to hear some explanation before I complete the order.

Are the capacitors malfunctioning? is the situation under control?

what happenend?

I am open to correction but I see no mention of any unit "blowing up".

If you are referring to units failing - your language is open to (mis)interpretation and should be less inflammatory.

The situations is bad enough as it is, the customer knows this, Naim know this and, I would hope, will resolve this between themselves.

yes sir, we are aware of the issue. neration of any new model!

p.s. - if it's a 2001-03 5-series then it will probably be an airbag issue......& BMW are fixing! Point being things happen either now or later & it's how the company reacts. There is, and always has been, a risk when getting in to the first generation of a new product (or wife for some!!).

I understand what you are saying but you have read what he posted :

At least the first UnitiLite expired quietly."

To be fair, no other manufacturer has ever gotten it perfect.

Whether BMW, Mercedes, Porsche Apple Sony or panasonic,or toyota  failures do happen.

there are various posts on this forum of minor failures, but this particular one got my attention.

I am a very loyal naim customer and will not consider any other brand of hi fi.

I certainly want Naim to keep growing and prospering and keep making kit that is the best in the world.

No - you stated very clearly that Naim chose to sell something else rather than resolve the issue.

You have no way of knowing that unless you where party to the conversation or have some kind of secret knowledge.

Naim don't even sell to the public, anyway.

Your comment is bang out of order and I think you should apologise / withdraw it, unless of course you are demonstrably certain that you are correct, and Naim chose to sell, rather than  deal with the issue.

Ok agreed, my comment may be out of line and I offer my apology for it.

I do not know much, if anything,  about what really took place. But I do want to know !

hence, lets not waste too much time on me.

As per previous topics on this forum, it seems the UnitiLite has serious problems that have still not been addressed by Naim.

Can it be a coincidence that the ramping up of new products, Focal move and staff numbers staying the same have resulted in a concurrent shortfall in quality control?

OK!

Now slightly off my original topic, but who cares...

Nick from Audio-T Portsmouth came today and installed a Unitiqute (actually a 2 but not badged up) and a NAP 100. Both units have been run-in well beforehand, Nick did a really nice job and deserves praise for cool professionalism and attentive service, it actually felt like having a friend round.

I've now heard the system in 3 modes:

Qute on it's own

Qute pre-out to NAP 100

Qute / NAP bi-amping PMC DB1is (brand new)

As my old speakers are not in a position to be used in the audition I won't compare the expired UnitiLites to any of the above. What I will say is bi-amping is definitely worth the (effort?)

I'm obviously expecting changes as one set of cables has not been run-in at all and the PMCs need more hours (PMC book says 15, Nick said 50 to 100 I think). Out of the box they were very neutral but soporific, some vividness is now apparent but the change noted by bi-amping I thought worth mentioning. Further updates ahoy and glad to be listening again!

Unitilite, great sounding machine... when it works, that is. I've had four of these in about three or four months, three of them were skipping cd's and/or couldn't read cd's at all (i wish Naim explained in their manual how to clean a brand new disc...) and i've sold the fourth one after it skipped on John Petrucci's 'Suspended Animation' cd, sometimes to much is to much. I'll add that my trusty cd transport, Onkyo C-7070, had none of these issues, in terms of mechanical engineering it beats Naim hands down, even though it's four times cheaper. Let's face it, we simply can't make cd players here in UK, look at Cyrus and their attempts to build a reliable cd player. And it worries me slightly, because there is another great looking british made all-in-one on the horizon, ATC SIACD that comes with five year warranty... but only one year warranty for transport. Sounds familiar, anyone?
