Surely we are failing our youngsters when we have to rely on charities to  provide breakfast for them? Never mind the invidiuosness of making sure this only happens when they have their SATS!

Surely you mean that a subset of parents are failing their children. I have a lot of sympathy for the children who are neglected in this way but can offer no easy fix.

Thank goodness the charities are doing something to help the kids rather than washing their hands with judgments about the parents.......

Michael,

It is possible to help kids and have judgements about parents.

OK I'll admit to washing my hands. It was at 6:45 this morning when I got up to make breakfast for my son to ensure that he got the most out of his day in school. Would be nice if a charity/government/society/anyone else would do that for me. I could have had an extra hour in bed and over the course of a year save the cost of a powerline in bacon, eggs, bread and pineapple juice......but, my kids, my choice to have them and my responsibility to look after them.

Were I to become aware of any form of child neglect within my immediate sphere of influence then I would not hesitate to render whatever assistance I could. Likewise were I to start neglecting my kids then it would not be long before my neighbours/family/friends would involve themselves. Part of any intervention may include an explanation of the responsibilities of a parent in ensuring that their children are adequately fed.

Willy.

We have no idea of the circumstances of these children or their parents.

But one thing is for sure, self-righteous indignation never solved anyone's problems....

There will of course be cases where there is a genuine need that needs addressed and they have my sympathy and my support. However, given the relatively high percentage of kids reported as turning up for school malnourished I’m inclined to believe that many of their parents are capable of doing better and that allowing them to abdicate the responsibility of feeding their children will ultimately create more problems than it solves…

With a government that is destroying the welfare state in order to finance tax cuts for the wealthy what do we expect?
