Trips coming up?

Posted by: mudwolf on 13 May 2013

After spending 8 years as caregiver to my folks I'm finally free to travel.  3 days I fly to Newark NJ and drive north to West Point Military Academy for my dad's 70th reunion, class of 43 and on the beach in D-day.  Not too many oldsters now, but there will be family there so taking pics, tours of campus and formal dinners in wonderful halls. My first memories of dad teaching there, gray uniformed cadets, marching bands and dad coming home in his uniform, a bit intimidating.

Hudson River Valley is quite famous and I"m driving around with a friend for a few days before we head back, FDR and Vanderbuilt estates plus numerous mill towns along the river, Storm King sculpture park I've known about for 30 years and DIA is there.

Off to Shanghai to judge wine (hopefully mainly not Chinese wine, although a smattering would be interesting) in three weeks. If my visa arrives.
Been to China only briefly before and never Shanghai, so looking forward to it.

A week cycling in the Loire quite soon, a long mid-summer weekend in Helsinki at a wedding (breaking our no-flying rule of some 10 years extant) and 2 weeks walking and cycling NW Scotland in late summer.

A fairly typical holiday selection for us. Our usual pattern is to attempt to avoid as much human contact as possible, have plenty of exercise and generally go 'off the grid'.

Thanks. I've only been once before (about 7 years ago) and loved it.

Early June we go up to Scotland for five days at Avimore.

Mrs D enjoys the walk up Ben McDui if the weather is fine and you can see accross to Ben Nevis. I will walk the Larig Rhu again from Cairn Gorm to the River Dee with Mrs D picking me up at the end. And we will drive over to Ft William and walk up Ben Nevis via the CMD Arete route, again assuming the weather is fine.

Breath-taking walks and scenery ! and even the drive there and back is quite pleasant.

Cheers

Don

mudwolf - the Hudson Valley is indeed breathtaking; I dated for years a gal whose mother worked as the secretary for the West Point athletic department for Col Anderson, and spent much time in the area, (they lived in Cornwall-on-Hudson.)  I even had the opportunity to use the Academy's gym because of her connection.  Beautiful area, but too bloody expensive to live in.

As for upcoming trips, this summer I am hoping to visit Russia, perhaps Санкт-Петербург (St Petersburg), but that is not a certainty yet.

I've just returned from 9 days at the Hotel Amenara near Sotogrande in Spain. Just looking for a holiday in July, possibly to Galicia.

I love Galicia - the beaches on the Costa Da Morte are fantastic and the seafood is the best anywhere I have found. Been there several times on the bike - can recommend places if you haven't been before yourself.

Hi Pev,

I would value some advice on Galicia. No rush as we've decided it may be better to visit Galicia in the autumn. My email is in my profile.

Thanks

Greece this summer for about two weeks.  I've never been.  Athens (briefly), the Peloponnese and then Santorini for a few days.

We're off to our Lake District haunt shortly, then up to stay with an old colleague of mine on the Isle of Arran for a few days. At least the weather forecast's somewhat better for the North West than for here in jolly old Suffolk.

Allow longer in Santorini... Fabulous, beguiling place.

Have just been on a wine trip to Greece, so can recommend some places to go visit for wine if you're into that kind of thing. Best wine in Greece and a truly great world wine is Assyrtiko from Santorini.

Just back from a week in Coral Bay, Pafos, Cyprus, a good break, but come on it bloody rained , with T Storm, Lightning the whole works, still it was a lot warmer than here.

Did find Cyprus a bit characterless, outside of the mountains most of what we saw was relatively new and had no "Cyprusnes", many Greek Islands still have a blend of old and new.
