NDX - Mac upnp

Posted by: PhilP on 20 May 2013

Hi, I'm new to streaming, have an NDX on the way and need to start ripping our CD collection (1,000+ CDs) in preparation for it's arrival.  I've spent some time browsing the forum to see how others have handled this but find the options a little confusing

I should mention that we've moved completely to Apple-based systems and don't want to re-introduce any Windows-based s/w.  We also don't plan to use iTunes in the context of this system.

I would very much appreciate any advice/comments on the approach I should take...

Possible Options

Use XLD on iMac to rip to FLAC to avoid tagging issues with WAV storing the files on a Synology NAS. Then use Asset to transcode to WAV on the fly to get best SQ.  This seems fairly straightforward - is it?

Use XLD to rip to WAV or FLAC (?) and use a Mac Mini running Asset as the upnp server.  If we go down this route would 4GB RAM (no SSD) on the Mac Mini be ok or would there be any appeciable benefit in upping the spec. to 8GB RAM + 256GB SSD?

Are there other options which we should consider?

Thanks,

Philip

I'm using XLD to rip (and convert) everything as ALAC straight into iTunes library. iTunes works for me as the metadata housekeeping tool.

Actual UPnP serving is done with Asset UPnP (via CrossOver emulation, until native OS X release is out). It transcodes ALAC to WAV on the fly and everything stays neatly in the iTunes library.

Exact Audio Copy (Free)

and

JRiver

You can define metadata as you want and tagging especially for Classic is very well If you define your Owen Tags!

As well the possibility to create and use several upnp Server Out of it at Same Time with fiter aso

Hi Murkku. I was intending to avoid iTunes and use nstream but yours does sound like a neat solution.  I thought that there was a beta version of Asset that would run natively on OS X - is that not correct?

From what you say, I assume the CrssOver emulation runs without any problems?

Thanks.

Thanks, Ragman. I just checked out JRiver and it certainly looks interesting.  I see they have an earlybird offer for the Mac release though a concern would be that they say "It probably won't be dependable for daily use for the first 3 months."

Thanks, Philip

Hi, and you can extend the Test period later.

And for the windows Version I have got a Code to Save additional 10$ After a period I have not bought it.

What I really like with JRiver ist the possibility easy to define the metadatas you want. E.g. I have added the opus number which is fine for classical music. As well some additional sub genres because "classical" as genres is not detailed enough if you have ~2800 classical recordings.

However this kind of defining metafiles and tagging for each libary and the possibility to creamt several upnp servers ot of JRiver with different filters and views is a great benefit.

Hi Philip,

As said, I use iTunes for metadata management (it also sorts the files nicely on the filesystem hierarchy). Asset shares the same sorted library tree for nStream/NDX to chew on. Yes, native Mac build is still in beta stage, it works but lacks proper transcoding and needs some polishing.

So, I've been happily running it via CrossOver for two years now. It's not the prettiest thing to behold, but it's rock solid and works transparently. It's also the fastest UPnP server I've come across and provides the library in a way nStream fully understands. Only annoying thing is the need for service restart before library changes get rescanned.

Ah, OK, I understand better now, thanks.

I was a little disappointed by the limited response to my question but having now spent a couple more hours browsing this forum and others I can see that it's been answered elsewhere albeit in a fragmented manner.

Anyway, I will now first try ripping to FLAC on my iMac using XLD and then use MinimServer running on my existing ReadyNAS Duo V2 to transcode to WAV on the fly. This should hopefully be a relatively painless experience and cost very little/nothing - unless anyone knows any different? .  I'm not planning to stream any hires content and understand that this NAS is powerful enough to handle the transcoding.  If not, then I'll probably try MinimServer on a Mac Mini.

If this doesn't work out then I will investigate the native versions of Asset and JRiver when there is a full production release.

Thanks, Philip

I use MinimServer with Flac transcoding to Wav and it works perfectly and sounds great

Thanks for the encouragement - some of your earlier posts contributed to my decision to try MinimServer first.  I was impressed by the quality and clarity of installation instructions and other info on the Minimserver site - a huge improvement on the technobabble/waffle on some of their competitors sites...

Yes there's been a lot written here about the evolving landscape of OS X native UPnP servers.  It seems like this world is changing rapidly, so a review of older posts is a good way to start. But with one version update things can swing wildly, for the better, or worse!
