Standby HD to UnitiServe
Posted by: Westminster on 22 May 2013
Hello, I have a question about UnitiServe.
The hard drive never goes into standby?
The question is why it is always on, but so does not reduce the hours of life of the hard disk?
thank you very much
Correct - we do not sleep the hard disc for two reasons...
Firstly that the drive spinning up and down is very audible when listening and is a distraction / annoyance and secondly leaving the drive spinning and at a nice stable temperature is the best environment for ensuring the greatest longevity - constantly spinning drives up and down puts far greater strain on them.
Cheers

I've often wondered why my UnitiServe is so busy.
Thanks very much Phil for the useful reply... to be added to my UnitiServe FAQ project...

Hi,
No - the SSD drive in an SSD based server is never put into standby however there are also no mechanical components on an SSD to put into standby.

Hello
I have a NAS and I hesitate between UnitiServe HDD and SSD
The hard disk of HDD UNITISERVE Will it better in terms of reliability that WD hard drive into a NAS? The HDD model there advantages over the SSD model in terms of ease of use or other?
thank you

Hi,
Both units (SSD and HDD based) work in exactly the same way and so are exactly the same in operation - except that for the SSD based unit you obviously have to set up a shared folder on your NAS and set that on the UnitiServe as a *STORE* (somewhere that the UnitiServe stores ripped CDs).
The HDD based version already has a store on the internal drive but, really, needs a NAS on the network to back itself up to however it can obviously be used without if you don't want to back the UnitiServe up.
