Facebook must think I'm stupid ...

Just been on Facebook to see if any new piccies of grandkids, and it seems they now advise me to add my phone number to 'secure my account and more'

Not bloody likely!  They'd only add it to some saleable database and I'd get yet more annoying cold calls.

Incidentally, I find registering with the telephone preference sevice only ever help for about 3-4 weeks, then all the PPI, Solar panel ec calls start up again.  Re-registering gives another 3weeks relief ec etc.

Hi Dungassin.

I registered with the TPS some years ago but they can't stop calls from foreign or unregistered numbers. I bought a BT  6500 cordless digital phone (£30 from Argos) which allows you to block calls from certain numbers, or any withheld numbers, or foreign numbers, or any combination of these.  The phone doesn't even ring.

Complete peace and quiet.

I used to get numbers of these nuisance calls & sometimes numbers per day.

As Kevin rightly says TPS can't block them all. Problem is in my case I do get some legit international & withheld calls, so I can't ignore any of them.

I tried a few things including hanging up & then just migrated to "go away" (or words to that effect)

I'm not saying this fixed it but for whatever reason we haven't had a nuisance call for well over 2 months, could be even longer.

Now I've let the cat out of the bag,  I can look forward to normal nuisance call service to be resumed ASAP.

The majority of the nuisance calls are obviously from overseas! because of poor English etc.

However, at least 40% appear to originate from the UK.  As i said, when I first registered with the TPS these dwindled to nothing for a few weeks, but then gradually reappeared, some of them obviously from the original offenders.  Re-registering with TPS repated this cycle of events, and after a further 2 re-registrations I have just given up in despair.  If the idiots are daft enough to no withold their number, Inreport them to the TPS, though that still doesn't seem to stop them.

I now have a set of 'prorgammed reflexes' which are:

1. If no answer within 2 seconds, or obvious background chatter, put down phone.  Why 2 sconds? Well, occasionally our 5 year old granddaughter decides to call us!

2. Poor English, put down phone

3. Obvious recorded message, put down phone

4. Some moron trying to tell me something is wrong with my computer.  Verbal abuuse and put down phone.

etc etc

Like you, Mike, we also get genuine overseas calls (SWMBO. is Maltese, and I have a sister in Canada), and a couple of SWMBO's friends withould their number.

Nice video.

Yet again multiple typos in my post. (bloody iPad)  Memo to self : I must stop using the iPad to post to the forums, I must stop using the iPad to post to the forums ... either that or start closely checking the text before posting)

(it obviously doesn't like the capacitance of my fingers or something.  Certainly crap for touch-typing)

Facebook thinks everyone is stupid...I think it is "projecting", to use the psychological term.

Of course, if I were a 29 year old little pr*ck with too much money & not enough sense, I would probably think everyone else was stupid too.

Yet another reason to avoid it, if any more are required.

I find Facebook a very useful way to keep in touch with and share information, photos and so on with friends and family who live a long way away. Do I buy anything through Facebook? No. Do I share any serious info? No. Do I respond to unsolicited contact? No. Who would and why?

In short it's an amazing tool if used carefully. Just like any other tool.

I can't understand the constant antipathy towards it.

Each to his or her own though.

+1. I said I would never be a member of this "club", but I gave in and have enjoyed it immensely. I communicate with many members of this forum on Facebook Chat. It's opened many doors.
