Beatles Vinyl Reissues

Posted by: Zipperheadbanjo on 23 May 2013

I'm in Europe at the moment on business and took the opportunity to pick up a copy of the stereo vinyl box. Have gone through the contents and am salivating at the thought of getting home and doing some serious listening. The book that is included in the set is incredible.

I had been on the fence about this purchase for some time due to all the hullaballuh about the digital > analogue transfer. Ultimately I decided to just pick it up and decide for myself. I was initially going to pick up just the LP's that were initially mastered in stereo... but after grabbing all those titles and then doing the math, the extra 100 Euros to have the remaining albums + the book made alot of sense.

One thing that I do find confusing... there are many references to this release being mastered from 24/44.1 digital masters, but I am certain that along the way I read an interview with one of the engineers responsible for the remastering and he indicated that in 2004 the analogue sources were mastered to 24/192 digital... those were then downsampled to 16/44.1 for the CD's, and that the vinyl was mastered from the original 24/192 with some additional mastering required to manage the silibince challenges presented by vinyl.

Anyway... I know this has all been covered on the forum... but I'm excited by my purchase... so wanted to share.

Also of note... was at a vinyl shop yesterday that had an original mono pressing of Sgt. Peppers... cover was split at the spine, but it had all the original inserts. The vinyl was in decent shape... no major scratches, but lots of surface marks. I'd say it was slightly below VG quality. The guy was asking 150 Euros. I took a pass on it.... although was tempted to grab it as I would like to own an original mono. Anyone think I should have picked it up at that price?

Steve J is your man regarding all things Beatles & vinyl , no doubt he will be along shortly, but imo 150 Euros sounds expensive for the condition described.

Abbey Road Studio's Sean Magee Talks About Mastering The Beatles LP Box
By Michael Fremer • Posted: Nov 13, 2012

I spoke today with Sean Magee about the just released Beatles LP box set. Magee's resume is impressive. He's cut both lacquers and DMM and does a great deal of AAA cutting for Pure Pleasure among other labels. Magee produced the lacquers from which the LPs were sourced. The first interesting thing I learned was that the lacquers were cut from 44.1k/24 bit masters not 96K/24 bit masters as I'd originally been told.
