Brahms violin concerto

I was just wondering which recording of this most excellent opus people on here are listening to. I am presently enjoying the Repin, but there are many others. I also like the Krebbers a lot. So what are you listening to?

Oiestrakh/Klemperer set is my fave so far. I was expecting something stand offish and analytical  performance from the duo but I was wrong. Oistrakh's playing is passionate but precise and clear. Klemperer's direction works beautifully with his rhythmic and pacy presentation. I like this set probably because it is least corny rendition of this famous tune. This recording offers great inner details and micro dynamics, too. 2nd movement is a bit of a Hollywood style schmultz but not as tear jerking as others I have heard. Full of twists and turns final movement.  Both artists are seasoned and matured, no wasted notes here.

I don't have this CD but a few month back I got to hear them live. Lisa was terrific together with Thielemann leading Staaskapelle Dresden.

Repin is excellent. Another famous recording from the late 70s is by Perlman and Giulini. Rather slowish, but very beautiful. And I like Isabelle Faust's trimmed performance, with smaller orchestra - although it sounded positively anorexic at first hearing, it's grown on me.

One of the most exciting performances on disc must by the recording of the live concert by Mullova and Abbado, in Tokyo. Sound is OK, but the audience is noisy.

Cheers,

Because it's restful.

...that's obvious,......Charlie is playing the large violin......it however doesn't sound like Brahms :-)

Kuma

I dug out my copy of the Oistrakh/Klemperer, on cd though, and I'm gonna give it a listen. It's been a while... and all that.

Great, BBM,

Please report back and let me know how it is compared to your current fave Repin.

I'd like to get to more Brahms' VC sets , but I am in knee deep in Stravinsky's Le Sacre Du Printemps, atm.
