Netgear Readynas v2 Big Issue
Posted by: J Saville on 28 May 2013
Hi all,
One thing I should point out about the Readynas based on my experience with it...
When transferring music to it via SMB it seams to put holes in the files. I am currently testing ripping to it with DBpoweramp and I am unsure of how a Serve would go. For mass transfers it seems best to use FTP instead, as I have read in another forum.
Just figured it was worth pointing out.
Cheers,
Jonathan
I had a readynas for about 6 weeks, a complete pain in the arse.
its biggest issue was a bug with it causing it to fill up its limited flash memory for logs within a week causing it to bum out. But all in all not a nice device in my experience.
Hi,
I have used a Duo v2 without problems, that is until netgear recently screwed up the Genie Apps, causing some apps to uninstall and on several units other apps would not install. If and when this is resolved I am satisfied with the Duo.
Of course incomplete files is a big problem, because I use it for backups of my ns01. Usually I transfer 16 bit flac files or 24 bit material, and all these files play without problems.

I've used ReadyNAS Duo V2 for a couple of years without problem - my HDX SSD rips to a music store on it and I regularly transfer downloaded FLAC HD files from my PC onto it. If there are any holes in the files, I don't notice them !
But from my IT background, files are actually full of 'holes'. Disk devices write sectors of data to the next available place on the hard drive, keeping a link from one to the next. It's the job of the device to retrieve all these sectors of data and present them in the right order to the program that asked for them. So if you are experiencing 'holes' JS, something ain't quite right in the retrieval process.
Now my guess (and it's from experience of this) would be that it's not the ReadyNAS, but rather the router or switch in your network that is interrupting the data flow and giving the impression of there being holes in the music.
If I've misunderstood your OP, please ignore, if I haven't, go get a good switch (TP Link seem to work well with music delivery & are low cost)
I have been using a Qnap since launching HiFi Lounge, but for some reason it will only show album songs in alphabetical order rather than number order, this only happens with my Naim kit, other streamers see it fine, very odd, so I've given up now and decided to get another NAS, I was quite keen on a ReadyNAS as Naim seem to use these on their roadshows but yesterday I decided to go with the Synology 213j with 2 x WD 2 TB drives so fingers crossed it works fine.

Paul,
Does the Qute itself show the tracks in the correct track order and it's just the n-Stream app that shows it alphabetically? If so then if you enable "UPnP compatibility" mode on the app then it forces the app to display without sorting them and that should sort it...

There shouldn't be any issues with storing files on a ReadyNAS - we use Duos (both v1 and v2) at work and have had no issues, similarly I use a 4 bay NV+ at home.
If you are having issues then can I suggest that that is not normal and you need to get the issue resolved rather than assuming "They just don't work..."
Phil
Been using an ReadyNAS_NVX for 3 – 4yrs now, never had any issue whatsoever, rip on PC with dbPoweramp then copy or move resultant files to both my NAS drives. If you have very long filenames, usually only a problem with Classical music you may need to shorten them, but the music files play perfectly.

So after a few days of ripping hundreds of cd's everything seems fine, the problem I have encountered only seems to show up when transferring a mass of files over a period of hours over SMB. As far as I can tell using FTP for that seems better.
This was a huge problem as I transferred over 300gb worth of FLAC music from my PC to my NAS when I first got it, so my entire FLAC library was lost. Still, Re-ripping in WAV doesn't hurt!
I just figured I would warn people of my experiences with this device. At the same time as buying this 6 months ago I also picked up a Netgear n150 modem/router, shouldn't be any problems there.
