Flu, shingles or chickenpox. Oh great :(

Posted by: Tony Lockhart on 30 May 2013

I'm obviously hoping it's just flu, but the blisters are worrying. My parents can't remember if I've had chickenpox before, so all all three are possible. At 49 years old, this could be a right ol laugh.....

Shingles is fecking horrible, you have my sympathy. If it's on your face, then you need medical attention soon, because there are risks to the optic nerve.

Shingles, I believe, only affects one side of the body at a time (most commonly found round the lower torso), so if the blisters/spots are more evenly distributed then it won't be.
Camomile lotion is your friend in either case.

At least neither takes as long to go right as a badly broken arm...

Shingles is actually painful because it's a nerve attack, whereas I think chickenpox is more a discomfort thing even though they are the same virus. in either case stay away from pregnant women  - if they have not had the virus it can be very damaging for the baby.

Don't think influenza gives you blisters.

Good luck and get well soon.

Thanks Rod. There were only three small blisters, and they were more like the result of me sweating in bed all night. Two in left armpit, one on my left arm inside the elbow. I saw my GP today on another appointment, and she said just keep an eye out for blisters, and go back if I'm concerned. Hey, at least my blood pressure and blood tests were all ok! Tony

Well, I'm not a medical person, but I had chickenpox as an adult and shingles subsequently (quite common I think), and it doesn't sound like you have either. So, hope that's something!

Good luck!

And I've just remembered I had a blister on my right side, so that pretty much counts out shingles.

Sounds more like Bubonic Plague  what with the blisters. However I am not a doctor (as if you could not guess that)

Posted on: 30 May 2013 by Tony Lockhart
I've just read the Wikipedia entry on Bubonic plague and, thankfully, I doubt I've that I've been messaged by a nurse friend on Facebook. I've told her to shut up before I top myself, the scary cow.

I'm ages with you Tony and got chicken pox late in life.  Thumping headache for a few days before a blister appeared on my upper arm....then another...etc, etc.

Headache disappeared when the murderous itching took over for about three days.

Scabs for abot two weeks afterwards but I've never had shingles as a follow up (yet).

Good luck if it is!

In 1994 at exactly this time of year I had Shingles very badly. Left hand, up the arm and on the neck. The Doctor took it very seriously, as I did when he explain that it was not something to mess with.

Four and a half week's really ill and off work. [Almost got the sack, so left four months later anyway].

It is no joke if it's shingles.

I had chicken pox as a young child.

You have my sympathy.

Stop being a  big baby!  The doctor will see you now...

Get well soon!

The shingles vaccine will be offered to all over 70's from this Sept onwards in the UK free on the NHS. Shingles is generally more prevalent and also more unpleasant with increasing age.

Chickenpox as a child is usually relatively trivial, but as an adult the serious complications are slightly more common so it is taken more seriously.

Had shingles some 20 years ago Tony, and do hope you dont have it. Still remember it to this day, going to bed was like sleeping on a sheet of sandpaper, could not get to sleep for almost 3 days.

Thoughts are with you Tony.  Hope you are feeling better today.  We hope at least that it is not anything serious that is going to damage your delicate sense of humour.

Get well soon.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I feel worse today, and rashes are forming all over me. It's looking like chickenpox. I'm wondering whether I need to go to the doc again.

Had chickenpox when I was 17, rather than as a kid. Not a pleasant experience. At all.

Public Service Announcement - the Apache is on its way to disinfect the area.

Sounds like she has the same sense of humour as yourself. Just what you need! :-D

Yep, I reckon if you keep turning up they will get you sorted out so they don't catch anything.

Take care.

Appointment made for 11.45. I have to check in, then wait outside

Poor old you! It does sound more like Chicken Pox than Shingles - I've had the latter & that's pretty nasty as others have already pointed out.

Hope you get better soon; I was going to invite you over but sadly that's not an option now (unless you've got a certificate from your GP attesting to your complete freedom from nasty diseases).

Yours sympathetically, etc.

Oh c'mon Tony, I could just sit in your driveway while the DBLs do their thang
Posted on: 31 May 2013 by fixedwheel

You could just sit out on the road with the herd of cats.

A very nice neighbour might bring chicken soup. Or scones.

No invite required.

How's this for service?

The GP I saw had a read about the latest on my confirmed chickenpox, and found a recent study in over 12s using an anti-virus. So he brought some round!

Anti-virals have been advised for adult chickenpox for some time.

Seems like they work if administered within 48 hours of the main rash appearing. Let's hope the ease the journey.
