Android app?

Posted by: RichardV on 31 May 2013

Have you planned an Android app in the near future? Only one iPhone app, which is not so good when we use Android ;-)

There was indication in the last Naim magazine that Android version is on the road map but no timescales or owt else yet.... C'MON NAIM we're not all Apple lovers!

IIRC I have read about a release of the android app in 2013. If this is true we only have to wait at most 7 months.

Whilst you're waiting - Bubble uPnP is an excellent control point application for android. Combined with Bubble uPnP server it's really awesome - probably better than what Naim could produce.

Thank you very much for this useful information. Will try it.

PS : thanks to all of you for your comments. Have a great day!

BubbleUPnP is a great app, but it lacks of some functionality compared to n-stream:

* gapless playback does not work. (It is supported by BubbleUPnP, but at least the naim uniti with firmware 3.16 does behave faulty.)

* All other funtions than streaming are not supported (radio-control, cd-control, etc.)

* Maybe I have misconfigured the app, but sometimes it does not switch to the next track, or it takes really long for the track change (even with gapless playback turned off).

* an advantage compared to the n-stream app is, that editing the playlist is much more comfortable and direct.

* also if you have an UPnP serrver that supports searching the music database, BubbleUPnP can fill the playlist with some completely random tracks. It is fun to guess which track is playing and to discover music that you have loosed track of. (btw.: the Synology NAS media server does *not* support searching but e.g. the minidlna does.)

So I hope that the forthcoming firmware 3.21 will improve in this topics. The 40th naim anniversary would be a good event to release the new firmware and the android app as well

Hi I have installed Bubble on my Galaxy S3.

Tried it, it works, but there is an ever increasing time lag when I select a song from the library to play. In short I paid for the full version of this and found it to be rubbish and unusable with my NDX.

Please Naim release an Android version for N-Serve...

Regards,

Trevor...

As someone seriously considering investing several thousand dollars in a Uniti system, I'm befuddled by the lack of an Android nStream app.  Recent stats show Android phones at 75% vs 13% for Apple.  And I can't help but wonder how hard Naim is working on this.  Note the Oct 7 2011 "Naim Audio" comment at https://www.facebook.com/NaimA...ts/10150845786190300 .  Has there been any recent Naim announcement about progress?  Has anyone been invited to participate in a usability study or test an alpha version?  Is there any discernible sign of progress?

If you are going to spend several thousand dollars on naim, stump up another 150bucks for an ipod touch. your argument is lame.

Hi Trevor

Bubble is at least as fast as nStream in my experience - pretty much immediate. I would look at how your tablet is set up with the app before giving up on it. Bubble certainly can work well even on a cheap tablet.

Ahh it's interesting that it works for dsome users. Im using it with my galaxy s3 phone. I wonder if others have tried it with this phine?

I've not used Bubble on that phone but I doubt the app is to blame... I am using it on a aging san francisco phone just fine. It is more likely to be your network or the server - which DLNA server are you using? There are other free control points for android, so you could try one of those if you still believe Bubble to be the problem.

Troll much?

That feels like the Easyjet model of business... there is the price of the flight/equipment but then extra if you want to use it properly (hold luggage/control hardware). If Naim only did an Android control app, I wouldn't be suggesting iPhone/iPad owners were too tight with their cash if they were asking where the iOS app was.

Despite telling myself "I will not buy a Naim streamer until Naim release n-Stream for Android" I convinced myself that Bubble would be an adequate alternative given all the positive feedback. I now have a Qute driving a pair of Guru Juniors and while the sound is amazing for such a compact system, I do have control issues using Bubble. Even with gapless playback disabled and after playing with timeouts, I still have track advance problems or tracks repeating.

Our house is i-device free and purchasing an expensive iPad mini just to act as a remote makes no sense. I'd really appreciate an Android version of n-Stream that can take advantage of the Android phones and tablets we already have.

To the argument that says spending £350 on an iPad is peanuts compared to what you've spent on a streamer, I would say firstly that's not true in the case of the Qute, where the iPad is over a third of the price of the Qute. Secondly, I'd say it's relative. We make cost-benefit judgements when it comes to sound reproduction that in my case are different to the judgements I make regarding remote controls. I would never have dreamed of paying for one of Naim's exotic remote controls, but I am happy to have invested in a CDS3/252/300 in my main system.

Naim, please can we have an update as to when we'll have an Android n-Stream?

Thanks,

Adrian

Hi Bubble isn't working at all. The lag ruins the experience. It finds the first song, but thereafter it takes about 30 seconds once launched for the next song to start playing.

Come on Naim, please produce and app for Android !!!

I am using a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone. Via QNAP NAS using the latest version of Twonky Server.

Hi thanks for the info...well you are very lucky. Lots of people find its slow and unworkable. I can't use this eith my galaxy s3 as it continually hangs and takes about a minute to change the song. Regards Trevor. ..

I'm sorry you're struggling Trevor. I have both an S3 and Galaxy 7, using serviio and Bubbleupnp Server on ubuntu. The hacks that Pev gave have made my set up (almost) trouble free on either android platform

Posted on: 30 October 2013 by gert

Since the Naim streaming firmware 3.21 BubbleUPnP works really great with my uniti1. There are no long time outs any more, no track advancing problems, etc. (I am using a synology NAS as server with its built in media server.)

The only pity is that seek2time does not work. Unfortunately naim seems not to have chosen the UPnP standard to implement this.

But: If you are using a Nexus 4 as controller device you will may find that it has some problems with wifi. If it locks and turns off the screen, wifi is suspended probably to save some battery. Certainly BubbleUPnP looses the chance to continue controlling the streamer if wifi is down. If you keep the screen on while playing music you do not run into this problem. So do not buy a Nexus 4 as UPnP controller. (I hope this will be fixed with android 4.4 that should arrive soon.)

Hi Gert, Is this the streaming firmware for the NDX? If so how do I upgrade this? Do I need to connect it to my pc or can I do this via the Ethernet cable connected?

The controller I am trying to use is a Galaxy s3 phone. I've given up with the ipad because Twonky doesn't display the songs in the correct order via folder view. (It only displays them alphabetically)

Trevor...

If I wasn't already a Naim customer then the lack of apps for other platforms than Apple would mean that I would look elsewhere.

There needs to be apps for

  • HTML 5 Browser
  • Windows
  • Android
  • ipad
  • Mac

In that order.

Check this page http://www.naimaudio.com/hifi-products/pdt-type/ndx and open the tab Manuals&Downloads. There you find the link to the firmware 3.21. Choose one of the two download links depending on a windows-PC or an apple computer that you are using.

In the downloaded zip file you find a PDF with instructions. You need to connect the PC via network cable (not only wifi!) to the same network your streamer is connected to. Also you need a "9 pin to 9 pin RS232 serial cable (or USB to Serial converter - ones with FTDI or Prolific drivers are suggested...." to connect the streamer to the PC..

But be aware that there is a problem with gapless music playback in the new firmware! I do not have this problem with my uniti1. But with other devices it might be different: https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...ead-vanished-?page=1
