Best Electric Bass Player

Cannot choose between Phil Lesh and Jack Bruce.

Anybody disagree?

With Hook on Bill Wyman, not only a great bass player. Also the most musically proficient and most underrated member of the Stones imo.

Ged Lee. Chris Squire running a close second.

You know Kevin, I really should have posted a pic after claim such as I made!

Started playing guitar at around 17, and by 21 she was playing bass in Jeff Beck's band...can you say "prodigy"?

Phil Lesh with Jack Casady an honourable runner up

Yes, she's excellent. Superb on the "Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's" BluRay. But I do find her rather....distracting...

Another vote for Jack Bruce, who, also happens to be one of my favourite vocalists

On acoustic and electric:

Avashai Cohen

Nathan East deserves a mention. G

Norman Watt-Roy is rather good

I love Jaco's playing, especially in combination with Joni Mitchell. He could overly dominate proceedings, though.

Marcus Miller.

The best? Just my favorite!!

In terms of sheer skill, then check out Michael Mannring. Don't necessarily like all of what he plays though, a little self indulgent for me.

Geddy Lee on early/mid period Rush. Chris Squire on 70's Yes. Jaco on anything he played.

The guy out of Double Trouble (SRVs band) - can't remember his name right now, for blues.

A lot of bass players are very underated IMHO, get the rhythm section of a band right first and the rest will (hopefully) follow.

I know he's not an electric bass player as such, but Dan Bergland of EST is a bit special, and uses effects on his double bass to good effect (no pun intended)

Cheers all,

Mike. Coventry UK.

My daughter

She's currently playing bass for Waxahatchee on tour in Europe opening for Tegan and Sara.

Oh, I may be a little biased.

Take care and go listen to some music,

Paul

Life without music would b flat

Great stuff. Saw Cris Squire a couple of weeks ago on the US Yes tour. Stood in front of him as be played Roundabout.. Pretty cool moment in a small venue.
Not on the list but someone who was great live was/is Mark King of level 42. Not musically everyone's cup of tea based on the postings above,  but he got my attention.

My favourite human and superhuman bass players:

Jack Bruce

Chris Squire

John Paul Jones

Bruce Thomas playing with Elvis Costello and the Attractions

Norman Watt-Roy! (don't laugh, I had to include Norman after watching him live with Wilko Johnson)

John Entwistle

Geddy Lee

Mark King

James Jamerson

Marcus Miller

Macca is pretty good on 'Hey Bulldog'...

However there is only one demi-god. He completely redefined the bass playing. The late Jaco Pastorius. I recommend a listen to the album Bright Size Life, where he had to hold back not to outplay Pat Metheny.

Since already so many have been mentioned I thought that Robbie Shakespeare deserves an acknowledgment also. Although it is sometimes difficult to tell where Robbie ends and Sly (Dunbar) starts. I wonder if they have ever done anything separately since mid-70's. At one point late 70's early 80's they seemed to be everywhere (from Grace Jones to Bob Dylan…).

Decent talent on the bass for sure. But I just couldn't stand the vocalist. I had to turn it off.
