Western Digital Red series

Supposed to be better for backups than regular consumer hard drives. Apparently, better for error recovery than regular WD Green/Black series...
They're supposedly tailored to use in multiple drive NAS environments and have a longer warranty (3 years compared to 2 years on the "Greens") ... their non-recoverable error rate is (as far as I am aware) the same (1 in 10 to the 14) but the "Greens" have a 50,000 start stop cycles rating while the "Reds" have a 600,000 start stop rating ...
Cheers
Phil
I have one in my qnap and its on 24hrs for the last 8ish months and its doing its job fine, no noise no problems.
I'm getting a new nas (giving my old one to one of my sons) and have Red drives for it. I don't know if they are better than the Greens, but I fell for the marketing
Last week I replaced my Netgear Readynas Duo with a Synology 213+ and inserted 2 new 3tb WD Reds. The Synology is very impressive with an excellent interface and is totally silent unlike the Netgear NAS.
As Bart has noted the Marketing blurb for the Drives was persuasive.
Looking for a couple of replacement HDDs for a NAS left on 24-7. Are these still some of the most reliable HDDs?
Where have owners bought these from? I noticed some warranty registration problems if sourced from Amazon.
I'm using 2 2TB more than 1 year in my NAS and 2 3TB without any Problem.
The Temperature of the HD is essential. My NAS is Based on unraid and in the cellar. Max 30 deg Celsius HD Temp.
The use of SMART can be Helpfull.
Note: A NAS is no backup.

I bought mine from eBuyer, who provide a good service.
been using the 3TB red drives X2 in my NAS for almost a year
no problems whatsoever

If you have a WD Green you may want to make sure you have loaded the latest firmware as there was a nasty bug when SMART was enabled. Google for "wd green smart" to bring up some links describing the problem. The WD green can also have an issue with too much load cycling (Google "wd green load cycle count") resulting in early drive failure. QNAP no longer include the WD green for on their NAS compatibility list.
The WD Red will be a better choice especially if you are going to run the drives in a RAID configuration as it supports Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER) which helps prevent battles with the RAID controller when the drive encounters a bad sector.
Thanks for the replies. Think I'll get some of these to replace a failing Seagate barracuda drive.
Using the RED too in my DS712+. So far no problem after 1 nearly year. Was previously on GREEN and they simply cannot last, averaging an uptime of between 8-10 months.
Have a pair of 2TB WD Red drives in my ReadyNAS Duo - working very well, since summer 2013. They replaced a pair of 1TB WD Blacks, which are now repurposed in USB enclosures in my backup NAS, an old Linksys NSLU2 device.
The Reds, are quieter and run at a lower operating temperature than the WD Blacks.
Next change will be to a set of WD 4TB Reds in a new NAS enclosure.
Simon.
I have two DS213J NAS systems. One has 2x4TB Seagate NAS "approved" drives, the other (which backs up the first) has 2x4TB WD RED drives. So far both have been reliable and pretty quiet.
DS213+ with 2 4TB Seagate NAS drives. 6 months and not an issue.
Had a lot of problems before with various WD drives including a 10,000 RPM raptor that 'lunched' itself quite spectacularly one day. Drives were all replaced under warranty but still a pain.
