The Joni Mitchell Interview- A CBC Music Exclusive

Posted by: DenisA on 11 June 2013

If your a fan, then set aside a couple of hours to absorb Joni's thoughts from her LA home.

Joni Mitchell's interview with CBC runs the gamut - her paintings, the creative process, celebrity, and the evolution of her work – with many departures in the conversation for things like poetry and political musings.

A simply refreshing and amazing interview.  CBC has been running more clips on the National tonight due to popular demand.

Finally got round to seeing the fascinating interview. A woman of heart and mind, without question.

One of the many quotes from the interview...

"If you listen to that music and you see me, you're not getting anything out of it. If you listen to that music and you see yourself, it'll probably make you cry and you'll learn something about yourself - and now you're getting something out of it."

One of the greatest musical artists of our time. And although sometimes the things she says are total bullshit, the quote above is total wisdom. And that's why I love her so ... to paraphrase Walt Whitman, she often contradicts herself because she is large and contains multitudes. Long live Joni!

I've been traveling in Joni's vehicle for 40+ years now and no other female artist has intrigued me more. It would have been great to see Joni's paintings, especially as she has expressed so much of herself in art, as well as in music. It was a wonderful way to spend 1h 45m and I'll probably do it again soon. The last time I did that was at the cinema, seeing 'Blazing Saddles' twice in a matter of days

I have never been the same since!!!

I think this sums up Joni's feelings of other peoples opinion of her...

"But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good;
oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood."

Just before our love got lost you said
"I am as constant as a northern star"
And I said "Constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar"

This verse always gets me. It reminds me of every break-up I've ever had, all at once.

(I'm now in love with and married to Canadian, and if we ever break up, I'll be completely unable to listen to that track ever again)

This track has very deep meaning for me too. Amazing how music like that can strike different people right to the core, probably for different reasons.

And I particularly appreciate the later version Joni cut on her Both Sides Now record (from 2000 I think it was) as well as the original version. She was a young woman when she wrote it and her later rendition sounds so real and "lived in" as though her own battles in life made the song mean more to her.

Coincidentally, I'm playing a gig tomorrow night (Saturday) with a wonderful singer, Megon McDonough, and Joni's A Case Of You is on the setlist, along with a lot of Dan Fogelberg songs (Megon and Dan were friends), some songs of Megon's and maybe a song of mine. It's at SPACE in Evanston, Illinois, USA if anyone is in the neighborhood.

Hi Fred,

It would be great if you could have your gig recorded, especially 'A Case Of You'.

Just found this KCRW session from 1994...
