Dac V1 with Foobar, help needed

Posted by: confusio on 13 June 2013

I can't get foobar to play anything from my library without skipping/jumping/jittering or whatever the term is.

I've been through the dac v1 setup procedure with windows/foobar/wasapi, uninstalled foobar twice but still no joy, It won't even recognise the file format for the bitperfect test.

The dac v1 works fine with itunes or windows media player but I want to try out the hi res music downloads that everyone's raving about.

I've been through every thread on here and the foobar forum but can't find anything related to my specific problem, I even rang Naim but unfortunately didn't get a return call.

It's probably something really stupid that I'm doing or not doing but my computer skills are limited.

Any help would be appreciated.

What is the file format and resolution of the files you are trying to play?

Does is work when you unplug the V1 and just use the PC's loudspeakers?

I just discovered that Foobar seems to need a component called WASAPI output support. This should do the trick.

Got the Wasapi output support already installed, as per Naim instructions.

I got rid of my little speaker system for the pc so I can't try that.

I guess you are talking about the WASPI component on the Windows level. I meant a plugin in Foobar.

I think it's the Wasapi plugin in foobar that I had to install, don't know about the other one.

Maybe this will give you a hint where your setup is flawed. I suspect the kernel's WASAPI support.

Thanks for the link, I had a good read through it and I think I've got the jist but the problem is I don't know how to implement any of the required changes or if indeed any changes are actualy required.

On the Naim website there is a downloadable pdf document with a step by step guide on how to install the Dac V1 with a windows pc. I've done that and it works fine, there is also a pdf document with a step by step guide on how to install and configure the foobar player with the Wasapi plugin for use with the Dac V1. Done that too, but it isn't working properly, and that's where I'm stuffed because my knowledge of the inner depths of computerism is somewhat challenged.

Download JRiver - free for 30 days. Follow naim set up instructions - pretty much all you have to do is select WASAPI from a drop down.

Here is another link to the foobar wiki. To be honest it didn't make me any wiser but maybe it can guide you in the right direction:

What is your Windows version? It seems that you need at least Vista for what you want to do. But I might be wrong here.

That other players are replaying your titles without probs may be down to the fact that they use some automatic DSP in order to downsample the stream if your OS doesn't support higher resolution material. Again, just a guess.

I'm running Windows Vista which is supposed to be compatable.

I did a bit of playing around with the foobar settings last night and managed to get the thing working!

I changed the hardware buffer in MS event mode from the Naim recommended setting of 100

I've now got it set at 50 and it's working!  Not sure how well it's working as I had a couple of failures with the bitperfect test but at least it's a start.

Not sure what effect that buffer setting is having on the overall performance though, maybe someone from the Naim tech department could enlighten me?

It would be nice to know what the correct setting should be as this might enable me to pass all the bitperfect tests.

Thanks guys for all the advice so far
