Feeling robbed. Unable to copy protected CDs on my NAS for streaming
Posted by: Michel Werner on 26 June 2013
Hi,
I do not know if I may be starting a thread that might be against the rules of the forum but I feel being robbed.
I pay for my CDs. All of them. I don't steal music. Ever. I think musicians must be rewarded for their creativity. But, I feel robbed when I am trying to copy a protected CD with XLD on a NAS for streaming on my newly acquired streamer and am prevented to do so.
Is there any solution?
Best,
Michel
PS: I have tried to find a thread on the forum but haven't.
Michel,
Would the CDs in question be Warner Bros, or a division thereof? I have the same issue. Sometimes if you use a different optical drive to rip the CD you can get it to work. I have better success with a Sony laptop than with a HP desktop. Infuriating and no guarantee of success.

The last two, but I had others, are Blue Note records Rudy van Gelder reedition. The editor is EMI. The scheme is probably pretty much the same for all records. Nevertheless, it stinks.

Interesting. Have a few dozen of these RVG reissue CDs. Never ran into this problem, but I'm still using a PC for ripping, format conversion, and so on.
I assume you are on a Mac? Have you tried using Max instead?
Good luck.

Never had a CD fail to rip using iTunes. I know.....stone me.
Thank you for suggesting other rippers. Tried iTunes and it works on one of the CDs from Blue Note. I should have thought about it but just assumed it would be the same.
Best,
Michel
I have a few RVG reissues and they have all ripped - although I have had to try different computers/rippers for one or two.
Actually, using iTunes solved the problem.
Fortunately, because I wouldn't like to have to reboot each time I have to rip protected CDs!

There are some that will fail even ripped through iTunes. The French Warners discs in particular will appear to rip OK but try playing them and you just get a very distorted sound. I have yet to find any way to rip them without this distortion.
The problem indeed manifests itself at the start. According to this thread, protected Warner records are the most problematic.
Actually, the Blue Note RGV records are edited by EMI. iTunes seems to rip them correctly. I have not listened to them all, but the few I have seem OK.
