All in one office system - No vinyl

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 27 June 2013

I'm looking for a system for my office.

Here's what I need -> Dac - preferably async usb, headphone amp, amp and really should be a one box solution.

Seems I really want all the features of the Supernait - 1 but in a shoebox size.

Since I'm behind a corporate firewall, I doubt I can use any of the streaming features in the UnitiQute and I think I should get async usb at that price point.

The PeachTreeAudio Decco seems to fit the bill better than any of naim's solutions - but I doubt I'll like their sound Class D amplifier and all that...

The Dac V1 doesn't have an amp. Does anyone have experience with budget Active speakers ?

I highly recommend that you look at Aktimate active loudspeakers.

Or some active speakers such as ME Geithain, Abacus Elektronics....

Are those speakers up to the mark when paired with Naim? I just don't have much experience with actives..

I'm looking at the AdamAudio F5s. Seem reasonably priced..

Since you must already have a uPNP server set up, I'd say a UQ is the obvious answer, add a pair of n-Sats or Neat Iota's for instant gratification.

While I ultimately choose to go with Naim, I was very impressed with Peachtree. The price/performance ratio is fantastic.

What about a Uniti series? Having tried computer audio both Mac via USB and ethernet streaming from an NAS , streaming wins hands down for me.  Even in an office setting, having to fart around with a computer tethered to the stereo is a pain in the neck.  I'm sure others will disagree....

Totally different direction on the lower end is something like a Firefly USB Dac + active speakers.

Actually it seems that streaming has been ruled out in the opening post.

MM, do you really need speakers or could headphones be enough?
Posted on: 28 June 2013 by MangoMonkey
I have my own office - and I can shut the door - so I do prefer speakers - that sound good at low volumes. Listening to headphones for long irritates my ears.

I'm currently running a $10 asus sound card and $80 creative speakers. They sound fine at low volumes....

Understood, it was just a thought. Unfortunately I don't have any suggestion for active speakers.

Ruark have just announced a pair of small active speakers.

Shoebox size : Have a look at the Audiolab M-DAC (I have one and it's wonderful ; the headphone section is superb) into a pair of Adam actives (I've not heard them - apart from briefly at hi-fi shows - but over on PFM they are well rated with the M-DAC).

If you can ease the shoebox requirement : At about half the price of the M-DAC is the Cambridge Azur 351A integrated amp (it has a USB input, 16-bit up to 48 KHz). The Burr Brown DAC inside is surprisingly good. The amp has a headphone output (I've not tried it). It's a gutsy, involving amp, a bit Naim-like really. A pair of the Cambridge S30 speakers on the end of this would make a great office system. Something like this, actually :

I actually bought a s/h M-Dac to see if I like the sound signature. The damn thing wouldn't work when it arrived. I had to mail it back to the dealer, where it started working again (miraculously)...

I'm done with that brand.

I think I'll give peachtree a listen. They're actually based in the same city as I am.. except for the manufacturing which is in China.

I'll also check out the headphone section on the UnitiQute. I neglected to do that when I had the unitiqute - now, it's unfortunately gone..

MM,

Don't get the DAC-V1 or the Qute. You're supposed to be working when you're at work!

Just get the peachtree so you won't get distracted.

go to sleep is more like it...

Good point. Didn't think it would be that sedative. Depending on your work and personal energy, perhaps an energizing, if slightly (or severely) distracting system, would be of use.

DAC-V1 w/ NAP100. Side by side same size as Decco and way cooler looking. Hide amp under desk. Or place in lap and pet. You can figure something out, clever you.

MM, I would go the active speaker route (add Audio Engine 2 to the list) or, for something better, the Qute with an external USB/SPDIF).
