Change from BT Homehub3 to Homehub 4 ND5XS won't link

Posted by: Chris G on 09 July 2013

Hi I've just changed router and can't get the ND5XS to link to the network.  I am able to stream Sonos OK with the new router in to my NDac, but can't get the ND5XS to connect to the network.  I've got a LaCie NAS drive, containing my music library, connected by ethernet to the router and then previously streamed the signal down the powerlines using Devolo  500AV Plus, with an ethernet cable from the Devolo plug in to the ND5XS.  I've tried restoring the ND5SX to factory settings, but still cannot get it to link to the network, nor find the NAS drive, all of which worked fine previously.  Am I missing something here, or has anyone else found the new BT HomeHub 4 doesn't work with the ND5XS.  All worked fine with the Homehub 3.  Help please anyone?  Thanks.

Did the ND5XS ask for a password for your network when you restarted after restoring to factory settings?

Is there an option on the new router to turn on upnp ?
Posted on: 09 July 2013 by Chris G

Hi Jon - no the ND5XS didn't ask for a password, neither before nor after restoring factory settings.

They can take the number as high as they like its still a hometurd.

hi Karl, I will investigate your suggestion

Update: Upnp is turned on in the router.  I have tried connecting the ethernet from the modem directly in to the back of the ND5XS, and still it doesn't recognise it.  Says it can't find a server. I can access the internet from my main pc which is connected through the mains via Dovolo without difficulty and the router and nas drive (including the music library stored on it) are both visible on networks viewed from my main pc.  I'm currently at a loss to know what else to try.  I will speak to my local Naim dealer tomorrow.

I'm running an SU and a Qute hard wired through gigabit switches connected to the giga port of a HH4. All has been fine

Have you set the ND to wired connection? Then turn it off, after checking the Ethernet cable is connected, and turn it on again. It should pick up the hub. If that doesn't work, I've no idea, but this works with my DrayTek.

Chris,

I seem to recall problems with the first BT homehub not recognising Naims when wired. The successful solution was to connect wirelessly and then revert to wired. Fools the little sucker long enough to get up and running.

Chris, have you tried setting the IP address manually, and setting HomeHiub switch port connected to the ND5XS to 100mbps/full duplex manually. Try to keep the connection to the ND5XS direct rather than go via Devolo for other reasons..

I have found the Naim timing of its DHCP client algorithm a bit hit and miss with some DHCP servers, such that changing timing by going wireless or different DHCP server can make a difference.. Hence the suggestion of fixing IP address. (assume the network adapter LEDs light when connected directly to your HomeHiub switch port)

That really is SO helpful.

Yea, calm down in the back.

the homehub is a turd, simple. Anyone using one is doing so because they dont know any better.

also whilst we are on it they should be had up for saying its the only device with dual wireless, thats a straight up lie.

I think they say its the only free one of its kind from your broadband company. Clearly I don't know any better as my HH3 and HH4 work fine - turds or not.

If you are on infinity, treat yourself to a real router such as the excellent Asus RTN56u, just 50 odd quid now on amazon, best in class just last year, superb throughput speed and genuinely good dual band wireless.

Also has a built in UPNP server, simply hang a USB harddrive off it with your music on. And a printer server. And built in ddns, etc etc.

Home hubs are turds, you don't currently know any better

Well, I guess at least I don't try to polish it

Actually, I did pay over £100 for a dual-band Netgear router. It was a turd and I no longer have it. The BT HH is far more stable and trouble free. No doubt it depends on what you need from it, but I would be reluctant to disturb a set-up which has no problems with two Naim streaming devices, 3 Windows computers, 3 I-devices and about half a dozen network connected TV's, BR players etc - it wouldn't make any sense.

We overhauled our BT account plan recently and have saved some monthly outlay in the process. A HH2 was thrown in. Whilst I wouldn't put it up for Pope, it's working well. If it breaks or becomes operationally inadequate I'll replace it with a recommended device. In the mean time I won't.  Don't see the point. I also reconfigured the old HH1.5 as a second WiFi point in the lounge and this has resulted in a big fat signal and more responsive nServe and nStream operation - instant and seamless now. Nice result.

If there is one thing I have learned with networks is if it works, don't touch it.

Equally if you have a home hub in the mix and somethings not working, hoist that first

Just to get back to the issue in question:

If the ND5XS has been restored to factory settings, then used wirelessly does it show your network?

Is it that it is not even finding the network at all?

Hi Jon, I restored to factory settings, then tried to connect wirelessly and it still couldn't find the network.

I asked my Naim dealer who couldn't help, also spoke to Naim direct and was told they had the same difficulties with another customer trying to use Homehub4, and couldn't resolve it.  I have now reconnected my old Homehub3 but now, guess what, the ND5XS can't find that either, when it previously worked fine with it.  I tried it this morning with no other computers on in the house and still it couldn't find the router.  Next stop BT though I don't expect for a moment they will know how to make a Naim product work with their equipment, particularly if Naim doesn't have the solution.  I wonder if it would be worth asking my dealer to upgrade the ND5XS to the latest software and in doing so if that would clear any settings the BT router might have affected in the streamer.

Anyone else out there successfully using a Hhub4 with ND5XS?

Posted on: 11 July 2013 by Jon Myles

Try disconnecting your Devolo network. Reset your ND5XS. Use the BT hub to transmit wirelessly to the Naim.

Then see what happens.

This advice is from a neighbour - who tells me the BT hub will not allow a device to connect over wifi if it has already connected to the Ethernet side of the hub.

He uses Devolo and BT As well. I don't know if this will help but I hope it might point in the right direction.

Hi Jon

Success, after a lot of fiddling, re-setting, re-installing Homehub 3 Software on PC, and after a hard re-set of the Hhub3 router, eventually I have been able to get the ND5XS working again but with the old 3.0 Hub.  It would seem there are problems using the Hhub4 according to Naim, so I am going to stay with the trusty old router, at least for the time being.

Hi jobseeker - your advice not to disturb a set-up which has no problems is eminently sensible!  Are you streaming successfully using Hhub 4?

Posted on: 14 July 2013 by Chris G

I forgot to add earlier, thank you to everyone for your help and interest.  The introduction of a Homehub 4 will wait until much later when hopefully problems have been sorted.  It's too much hastle and disruption - time which could be spent listening!

Hi Chris. I am now typing this in sunny Madeira ! My HH4 has worked just like my HH3 since the moment it went in, ie no problems at all with wired or wireless clients. I have just one wireless streaming device (Revo K2) which works fine, as does everything else (touches wood)
