Upgrading the software on a UnitiServe - an idiot's guide

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 18 July 2013

When it comes to computery, I'm a bit of an idiot. So here is how I did in, in easy language.

Burn the discs.

Stick the first one in the US.

After a minute or so it will be spat out.

Remove the disc completely.

After about 15 minutes, the logo will flash repeatedly.

Wait for it to stop flashing.

Put the US into shutdown mode and then turn it off.

Wait a minute.

Turn it on again.

The logo will flash for quite a while.

When it stops flashing, check in the old DTC that it is now at 1.6g.

Put in the second disc.

After a little while, it will be spat out.

Remove the disc completely.

After 15 minutes or so, the logo will start flashing. The flashing lasts longer this time.

(after about 10 minutes, the logo flashed once. I ignored this and waited, which was the right thing to do).

When the logo light becomes solid, put the US into shutdown mode and turn it off.

Wait a minute.

Turn it on again.

The logo will flash for quite a while. Don't panic.

When the logo is solid, uninstall the old DTC, and install the new one from the second disc.

Check in the new DTC that the server software is now at 1.7a.

Pat yourself on the back - job done.

I do hope this is helpful.

Done to the letter and now I have no unitiserve, it's going back to naim. I would be interested to know how many have had issues with their userves as I am now on my third power supply and my unit still not working since the upgrade.

Like your style HH

maze, I have had a new power supply for the US several months ago, but I've had it since 2011 and that was the first malfunction.

This upgrade worked pretty much to plan though.

Im always nervous, just in case it doesn't, and I'm sorry that it hasn't gone well in your case.

Naim are always very responsive though, so I'm sure / hope yours will be sorted pdq.

I guess you had a few cups of tea during the firmware upgrade especially during the 15 minute sections.

Thanks my favorite fish.

Just 1 question regarding the new DTC. Do I put the second disc in my pc or retrieve it from the Unitiserve? If the US - How?

Thanks

George

BTW I'm hungry for Halibut after reading you guide

I did the upgrade from 1.6d to 1.6g then 1.7a. No problems.

Thanks for the advice

Brilliant. It's good to hear of success rather than failure.

Excellent, clear instructions for US!

Flawless upgrade completed just now.

Thank you.

George.

Hello - I installed 1.6g last night and it went fine.  This morning I installed 1.7a, and after a few minutes, like expected, the light on the front of the Unitiserve started flashing.  It's been flashing for over 2 hours now - should I let it keep running?

Hmm, tricky. It sounds as though it is trying to reboot. I'd mail Naim rather than risking turning it off.

thanks Hungryhalibut - I just sent an email - still flashing after 6 hours!

I did my UnitiServe update last evening, and kept HH's post open as I progressed.  All went just as described, with three comments.

1.  No need to remove the cd's -- my uServe spit them out onto the floor.  (I think it was saying, "Ptooey, this isn't Miles Davis.")

2.  The 'it takes 15 minutes for the logo to start flashing' was accurate to the minute for me.  But the time that the logo actually flashed was both times pretty short -- 1-2 minutes, no more.  Note:  this flashing is at a faster rate than seen when the uServe is being shut down.  The faster flash will tell you that it's updating itself.

3. Back-patting is optional, but I agree with it and recommend it.

I am not sure that ALL of the new functionality is within the updated OS X app (n-Serve for OS X).  Can anyone comment as to whether the Windows DTC version is needed for some functions?

That's what my userve was doing when I did the upgrade, it's on it's way back to naim for repair and I am upgrading it to 2tb while it's there.

Excuse my ignorance, but where in DTC do I discover what the software version is? I have looked in 'about' , but I don't see anything like 1.6a?

Posted on: 09 August 2013 by Klout10

David, are you using the n-Serve app to control the UnitiServe? If you do, go to the 'settings' to see the actual version of the app and the UnitiServe...

Regards,

Michel

The important thing is the system version of the firmware running on the server.

On the Windows dtc, on the tools tab open Status & messages, highlight system status

scroll Down to

system version wich should be 1.7A-sp1

On n-serve, under more, settings, you will find both the version of n-serve and the system firmware called server version.

Have put in the first disc. Half an hour has gone by, but no flashing. Any advice?

Check the current firmware version to see that it is correct before trying again? G

Posted on: 10 August 2013 by David O'Higgins

I can't do that because DTC times out when I try to check system status - a problem which this upgrade is supposed to address?!!

Fool that I am, I realised that I had burned DVD's instead of CD's!

However, having burned CD's, I still cant't get the upgrade to work. I suspect it may be something I'm doing in the burning process. Can someone provide an idiot's guide to this?

David

What is the operating system?  I had the same issue and it turned out I wasn't burning the files correctly in Windows 7. G

Posted on: 12 August 2013 by David O'Higgins

It's Windows 7!

Did you get around it?

David

Posted on: 12 August 2013 by GraemeH

Yes I did David - Turns out I hadn't been properly completing the last stage of 'burn to cd' and so when I looked at the disc content the file folder was visible but it hadn't unpacked the data for use by the ( in my case) HDX.

Be careful to complete every step.

Sorry, but I cant recall each step to recount to you.

Best of luck!

Thanks Graham. What do you mean by "it hadn't unpacked it" ? If I do  a dir of the disc, what should I see?
