Klemperer Box Set Order of Play

Posted by: Tony2011 on 18 July 2013

Arrived in the post today.

Many thanks to  Grandmaster George, Kuma  and Richard for the recommendation.

Question:

is there any particular order one should listen to these pieces in order to get the most out of the works?

Once again, please be gentle!

Not really, as the music is all grand, but perhaps a nice hook might to start with the Consecration Of The House Overture [choice of two recordings], then perhaps the Egmont Overture, just to get you in the mood.

A favourite of mine that gets less airtime than most is the Eighth Symphony, which is great music given a great performance!

I'd save the Choral Symphony till you have listened to the other eight.

There are three recordings of the Seventh. Start with the 1955 [very early] stereo recording. the two later ones will make sense once you have that one under your belt! They are both less compelling in terms of tempo that the first [i.e 1955] recording. But carry a conviction none-the-less that is unrelated to sheer velocity.

A delight that you can torment people with is the late recording of the Prometheus Overture and Incidental Music! You would never guess the composer [let alone the performers] from this! Most unlike Beethoven and played with a charm as charming as this ultra-rare Beethoven actually is.

Enjoy!
