Wish to see the Search Engine Restrored,
Posted by: George Fredrik on 21 January 2011
Wish to see the Search Engine Restored, the possibilitiy to quote with one action, and to have a movable "new window," movable so you can see what you are replying, to restored.
It seems to methat all the fluff of links to twitter and facebook are totally pointless unless the Forum continues in good health, and at least equals in functionality the previous dispensation.
Personally I could not care less that one third of the page is lost due to some insignificant stuff on the right, if the old functionality were retained. Any really worthwhile thread or post will require scrolling down anyway, but to lose basic functionality is to be abhorred in my opinion.
Does anyone agree, or am I alone in finding functionality more valuable than appearance. So far the new dispensation seems more about "fancy” looks than functionality, and if you dig deeper than the trite or pat response the system is useless.
So who will join in a campaign to see the old functionality restored?

I'm with you on this one george.
It is becoming even more difficult to read threads when other posts have been quoted. It wasn't the easiest thing on the old forum.

I'll join you George.
What you've said makes a lot of sense.

The search engine and quote button have been requested. As for the separate window, that may be more difficult, but let's see what can be done.
Naim have been taking careful note of all the feedback - the best place to make requests or comments is on the feedback thread because that is where the info is collated and that is where the developers are looking. Everyone wants the forum to work well, just don't expect everything to appear straight away. The developers are working on it (so I'm assured).

When I can be bothered to use firefox, on which the quote button works I find it OK. It would be nice if it worked on more browsers though (understatement). It doesn't take any more commands than before - fewer in fact. The order's just different.

George…… With you every inch of the way. Also, I am using IE 8 browser, which must surely be the most used browser on the net I would have thought. Yet I have no working ‘Quote’ function and a posting window that can’t survive a page refresh or switching to previous page; utter nonsense.
Surely, if a designer is going to build a new site wouldn’t they begin by looking at the old one, discover what functionality it has and build on that to add any required new features/function? Obviously not it seems.

Peter

Everybody's with you on this and it's been asked for in a hundred other posts. Why aren't Naim getting things together so umpteen folk don't have to ask every day for such bleeding obviously essential functions to be reinstated?
And I'm still having to untick the Watch This Post box.

100% all the way
Additionally whilst the Facebook & Twitter links might appeal to some, most I guess the under 40's; I cannot see any benefit that enhances the forum. Maybe its an age thing, but I found my few months on Facebook a total waste of time & just so-o-o-o pointless.
Keep it/them if it does something deemed to be worthwhile for Naim in the marketing world
But the search engine is far & away more important to the Naimish

Tom, go to your Personal Settings. Click on Notifications (box to the left). Then check the box to suspend all e-mail notifications.
However, I agree that it makes more sense to have the "Watch This Post" box unticked by default. It's on the list...

Yeah come on guys, let's all make sure we post nice and tidily in the right place. Its really not fair to expect developers to have to look for feedback by hunting manually.
Perhaps one day someone will invent technology that allows for data to be found electronically?? Call it 'Boogle' or something.
In all seriousness - this Forum has historically been a fantastic, rich seam of information. The social aspect is good too, but the technical help is the jewel. When I decided to run to an active system it was searching articles that gave me the confidence and understanding to begin the journey myself.
And then the generous help given by Darke Bear and Julian H (to name just a couple) was essential for me to set up Snaxos etc properly.
I know that Naim point everyone to dealers for assistance first. But the reality is many dealers have little/no experience of some things. The practicalities around active systems and loading plugs for Superline are good examples. I have used a very well known London dealer for years and they were about as much use as a chocolate fireguard when I wanted help on those things.
So come on Naim - this Forum is a goldmine - help us dig.
And thanks again to all you lovely contributors. I really hope you all stick with this new site. Be a darned shame if people left.

Perhaps it is only a matter of time before Google re-index the site so we can use Google to search instead? I found that Google was usually faster and better than the search engine on the old forum anyway...

The search engine was one of the big advantages of the real Naim forum.
A huge database of information.
Is it gone now?
BTW. Try to search for any naim-related on google now. Google will send you right back to the old forum, with no infoformation.
Thank you Naim!

Yes Christian, but I imagine it is only a matter of time before Googles bots re-index the site to point search results to the actual pages on the new forum.

But will Google find older posts too?
From 2001 to 2010?
As someone else here said, the old forum with the Find-button was a gold mine.
Posted on: 22 January 2011 by Tony Russell
Yes, google will index the entire forum (including old posts).

Dear Frank,
Hmmm! You may have a point there!
Dear other respondants,
Thanks for the support. I started this as a thread that would nail the two major weaknesses as I see them with the new forum arrangement, knowing that the thread would never get more than a few replies.
The trouble with Mr Stevenson's thread is every point has been made several times, and there is not much focus to it. I am sure that this little thread will be pointed out to the people trying to fix the software, as much as they will be able to find the important points in the main Naim in-house thread ...
