Over the years I have bought and re-bought the same content:
45/33/tape/CD/Video/DVD/DVD-A/SACD ....BluRay?
OK, I still have all my vinyl. But, I have always been vociferous in attacking the new DRM controls that the industry would like to make mandatory.
But, I am re-considering.
Now that media streaming is becoming a reality, I could be tempted.
I won't be getting rid of my albums, still the best sound through my system, but for the rest, streaming across the internet may be far more effective and efficient for me.
Why?
I have LOTS of media. Some I use regularly, others very occasionally. This media has cost me money to purchase, money to insure, and now I have ripped my CDs, and am considering ripping my DVDs, and need a technology infrastructure to manage this.
IF, this media was available on the internet, at the quality I require, I would save space, time and money; and avoid the purchase and re-purchase as technology changes.
Why the possible change of heart?
Bought a new cheapish BluRay before Christmas and have been watching BBC iPlayer and LoveFilm via the machines software, streamed from the internet onto the TV.
The quality has been variable, but this is really starting to come together.
I have also been considering ripping my DVDs, and considering what this means in terms of time and money; and then pondering the possible re-purchase of the DVD content in HiDef format.
Quality is the main issue I would have currently.
While I have seen reasonable picture quality sound is very important to me, and almost certainly everyone on this forum. This would give DVD (pcm) and BluRay a definite advantage for me currently.
But if the needed bandwidths into our homes was available, and if the content providers made the material available at high quality, would you move to the pay-on-play model?
