Unitiserve - play mode using Nserve app?
Posted by: Rustyneedle on 23 January 2011
Had it all planned, scrap my 15yr old cd player, purchase unitiserve use it as a player, controlled via the Nserve app. This I have now done, but can not find how just to play CDs using the app.Currently the only way I can alternate from rip to play mode is via web browser control on the laptop.I do understand that the quality is said to be superior after ripping but for now I just want to see if this functionality is possible via the app.Any help would be most appreciated.

It cannot be done from the nServe app. This functionality has been requested (on this forum) for a future version.
It's not a big deal to set it to 'Play' mode from a web browser, or attached monitor. Once you've done this, then control via the nServe app is the same as if the CD had been ripped.

Many thanks for clearing that up Jan.It does seem odd that a basic function as this can not be selected ,or clarified, from the app.The app on first viewing does seem weak in many areas,or not as user friendly as it might be.Perhaps I'm just a stereo typical vinyl junkie slow on the uptake.
I wonder why the app couldn't have mimicked the web browser? Must be obvious answer to that, that I haven't grasped.Regards

In my case, I've only played a couple CD's. Unless you rip frequently, I would set the default to Play. I'm sure the apps will improve immensely in the next 12 months.

12 months. Perhaps I should hibernate,or should I say " Time for bed ".

The web browser app is created using Flash. ipods/ipads do not support flash.
I'm not saying it will ever get included or that it would take 12 months. I have a strong feeling the applications will evolve for the better in the coming months.

Thanks for your reply Devlyn.May I also sneak in a question regarding the nServe?
Mine has been up and running for a couple of days and sounds a little strident, which I am putting down to giving it time to burn in,did you experience the same?

Rustyneedle,
I didn't feel it did. Are you using Upnp to play the files or a direct connection?

Hi All,
I can confirm that new versions of both n-Serve and n-Stream are under heavy development here at Naim HQ. The new versions will natively support both iPhone/iPod and iPad.
The new n-Serve all will indeed have an option in the settings screen to switch between rip and play mode

Hi Develyn, sorry for the delay in replying I needed to rip some old favourites,as I was referring to the nServe in play mode sounding, in my system, strident.Listening to ripped files via ethernet this has disappeared.I was beginning to think some serious housekeeping was in order, cable dressing etc.
I do hope the issue in play mode resolves it's self, with future playing, as I would prefer not to have to rip every disc.

Thanks Tom for reassuring me and probably many others that Naim are on the case.

I am playing a cd on the unitiserve, but i dont have any sound! There is no volume on the nServe app. I have a Superuniti, but it does not see the cd in the untiserve.
What am i doing wrong?.

I do not know what everyone else is doing but on the N-Serve app I have if you touch the green dot light opposite the rip mode the light turns grey and the US is in play mode.
