Hi Allen,

2D version.

Not convinced about 3D at home, and you can get this TV at very good prices at the moment.

For me it is a good screen. I don't watch TV, so this gets used purely for movies.

The DVD5 via HDMI is very good, but I've no doubt that BluRay would be better.

Watching Aliens, for instance, looks good 85% of the time.15% of the time you can see the poor saturation, but it doesn't detract too badly.

The PIXAR films just look good, full stop.

I will probably buy the Oppo bluray, with the analogue outs for feeding into my AV2.

Just bought Terminator 2 used from Blockbuster so I can do a comparison between the DVD5 and a Sony 370 BluRay I use in my 2nd system.

Connected the BluRay:

...and?

As you can see I've filled the screen, what Phillips call its 'Cinema 21:9' mode.

The image in post 1 was taken in 'Super Zoom' mode.

The screen can be filled with excellent quality from BluRay. From DVD going to 21:9 emphasises picture issues from DVD.

I'll try comparing DVD from DVD5 against the upscaled image from the Sony.

I've heard so little about these Philips 21:9 TVs recently I was beginning to think they had come to nothing. Looks fantastic but sadly the finances won't permit one for a very long time indeed.
It would be interesting to see what a 4:3 picture looks like.

You know, I've never bothered - I'll have a play and post a photo.

Congrats to your new cinemascope TV

When you use subtitles, you'll have to be careful what player to choose for a 21:9 screen.
A lot of subtitles get cut off, because they where in the black part below the image, which is zoomed offscreen now (which is no problem for cinemascope on a usual 16:9 screen).
Only some of the Philips players where able to shift the titles up into the image to make them visable...

Thx Adrian,

It has a 21:9 subtitle mode - just tested it, and it does work.

Yes, depending on the mode you choose. You can then move the picture in relation to the screen to get the best compromise.

Looks fantastic.
Have you ever considered putting curtains round it to hide the unused screen?
