Emanuel,

don't worry.  The topic is still here it's just it was posted in the wrong room. Anyway, I sent it over to the Naim Tech Support for their comments and assistance. So it'll be back once I have their reply.

i want to control my SuperNAIT with rs232 and i cant find any helpfull info and i do have the document from naim but it does not cover for example what my serial number is or if there is a test command to see if the module is working....

(its the new module with 2 rj45 one in and one out and to communicate with it i must know my serial number)
Posted on: 25 January 2011 by Emanuel
Richard Dane: Thank you now im back to not pissed... its still a bit frustrating it has taken a very long time to get this far... but i have mailed "Steven Hopkins" and he just asked me if i got the document and im waiting for a secound mailback and yes i got it from 3 different persons

thats why i asked in this forum for i really wanted it to work ASAP

Richard i need to get in contact with Tom i got a mail that i don't get 100%

my module is a RJ45 module (NOT the old db9) and he tells me i don't need the serial to communicate with it.... but in the pdf it says "The device identifier consists of up to 6 characters"  ....................................................

WHAT IS MY SERIAL NUMBER!!!!!

HELP????

Oh! and By the way:

Tom: if you see this in Docklight (as you use yourself) how do i send * <25ms delay> before i send one of the commands from the "SuperNait RS232.ptp" file you made??????
Posted on: 25 January 2011 by Phil Harris
I've flagged this to Tom and he should be along shortly however you definitely do not need to send the serial number of your unit in any RS232 comms.

Phil
Posted on: 25 January 2011 by Emanuel
Phil: ok i believe you then (but still your pdf from the dealer page says its needed) but then the problem lies in the "*<25ms delay>" part...

from what i understand Tom uses Docklight for testing? and i do not see the "*" to the left where the Display Toggle command is i only see "*SN b<CR>" ?

is this just me? (clearly seems like it )
Posted on: 25 January 2011 by Emanuel
the Docklight file i got is wrong..... it says verbose mode if is X when the supernait.pdf and Tom tells me X is "toggle display"

Hi Emanuel,

You cannot implement a 25ms delay with Docklight. To test the commands either:

- Send them repeatedly very fast from docklight (you need fast fingers for that!)
- Point a remote control at the supernait and hold down a button that will have no effect on the SuperNait (e.g. a CD button). This wakes up the microprocessor as it has to decode the IR. When it is awake (i.e. you are still holding down the button on the remote) you can send a command from Docklight. We sleep the microcontroller when it is not in use to improve sound quality.

This may sound a little complicated but the RS232 interface is designed to be used with automation equipment such as Crestron or AMX where these kind of delays are very easy to implement.

Hope this helps

Tom: holding "CD" and pressing the "*SN X<CR>" button does not work...... i have tested with 2 diffrent brands of usb-db9.... my old computer do have a db9 on the motherboard i got a tip that that could be the reason...

one usb-db9 was Prolific and the other one was ATEN uc-232a.

could the software in my SuperNAIT make a difference ?

Hi Emanuel,

Maybe I might be going back too far here and if I am I apologise however I think it's important to clarify some basics.

Just to be clear, when the serial commands doc says "SN" it does not mean serial number - there is no requirement for the serial number to be sent in any serial comms. The document says to send the single character '*' to wake up the microprocessor followed by a gap of 25mS then the characters '*', 'S', "N', <space / ASCII(32)>, 'X', <EOL, ASCII(13)> - a total of seven ASCII characters.

It is unlikely that you would be able to manually type the characters fast enough to keep the microprocessor from going back into a sleep state. As far as I am aware there are no different software versions for the SuperNait and no known issues with RS232 control.

Cheers

Emanuel,

There are so many variables in your system (homemade cables, USB>RS232 converters, PC driver etc) that it is difficult to debug this on the Forum. Have you tried speaking to your distributor about this? I think they have a good tech dept.

BTW, the CD button on the remote doesn't actually send any IR, it just changes the remote to CD mode. Try pressing CD then a CD button such as Play.

Also make sure you connect the cable to the IN RJ45 socket

Phil: sometime its good to go back to basic. the only thing however i did not understand in the doc was "The device identifier consists of up to 6 characters" so what i guessed was i needed to input the serial why else would you have a input and output rj45?

Phil, TJ: we do have progress but still one small problem......

i did as TJ just said about pressing "CD" and then holding "PLAY" and in Docklight i pressed the X command according to the manual aka "Toggle Display" that does WORK 50% what i get is a log in Docklight telling me:

2011-01-25 19:16:09.453 [TX] - *SN X<CR>
2011-01-25 19:16:09.511 [RX] - #SN X<CR>

BUT the display does not toggle.... BUT that is your document that is to blame becouse that is for turning verbose OFF and W is turning verbose ON on SuperNAIT but if i instead send a small "a" it TOGGLES THE DISPLAY !!!!!!!!!!

btw TJ, a friend is helping me making a better program to control SuperNAIT and i do understand this is mainly for CRESTRON or likewise.

thank you all very very much for your help!!!!!

Emanuel,
I'm glad you are making progress and I hope that your automation project is a success!

Jim&Don,
Glad you are enjoying it! I bet you can't wait for the next installment.

It seems Emanuel has discovered a genuine hangover cure!
Posted on: 26 January 2011 by Emanuel
TJ, Phil: you got that part about that the PDF is wrong? "X" is not toggle display its "verbose off" ?

at least on SuperNait "a" is display toggle.

I let the person who is in charge of the documents know and I'm sure they will take a look...

Hi Emanuel,

Well spotted! there were a few incorrect codes in the RS232 spec for the SuperNait. I have updated the document. The error crept in when the table in the word document was reformatted. I have mailed you a copy and have updated the one on the Naim download site

Glad this one is in the padded cell, if you don't have a PhD in I don't know what, you would most likely need a straight jacket.

... just kiddin' ... carry on.
