count d's request to remove avatar piccy

To understand thid post, you have to look at some stuff on the system pics thread.( I'd love to "quote" but f^&ed if I can figure out how to in the new forum.)

With all due respect Count D...... What is the problem? How are you being damaged by someone using your picture of a logo? Do you claim some commercial value to it that is somehow being usurped, expropriated or stolen? Whenever someone uses an image of mine, I love it. Go for it. I feel honoured that someone else gains pleasure, benefit or other function from an image that I have created.

In general, I agree with you Winky.

The net's hippy-ish, anarchic spirit presents a problem for musicians, writers, photographers and illustrators who earn a living from what they do.

Chris,

True enough with respect to professionals. What I don't get is why someone would be defensive of a picture that has no apparent commercial value.

winky,

I think you'll find that count'd IS a professional photographer.

If so then should the picture not have a © on it?
Given that it's not his logo can he request a removal by some one else using that copyright (I guess) logo?

...a pro photographer who took a picture of a copyrighted corporate logo, posted it on a public website where he clearly knows it could be taken and used at will, and is claiming it as his property not to be used without permission?

The last time I checked any artist not wanting people to download their work freely would do one of the following:
- NOT upload the picture
- Watermark the picture
- Copyright the picture
- Restrict its download from the simple right-click "Save Picture"
- Upload in very lo-res
etc...

I saved that same picture when he uploaded it.  Dont worry Count.  I just deleted it.

I'm coming in late on this thread but which pix is it?

I already saw someone using my pix!

I'd also like to see this professionally taken photo of a proprietary logo posted uncopyrighted and otherwise unprotected on a public message board. Maybe some of my friends would like to sell it for loadsamoney. Or maybe not.

Talk about much ado about nothing.

I think this is much ado about very little.  My take is that if you want to use a picture for your avatar that another member shot then best ask them first.  It's just polite.  Who knows, they may have been wanting to use it themselves.  In this digital age we tend to take a lot for granted.  Just common courtesy really.  I'm not making any judgements here on either member.  It was an unfortunate mistake that anybody could have made and the request to remove the image as an avatar was made politely with no fuss.
