Ralph Towner
Posted by: bob atherton on 02 February 2011
I have been a big fan of Ralph Towner for many years but for whatever reason I have never got around to seeing him live.
This will change on 3rd March when he plays at St Georges Hall in Bristol. Tickets booked, row C. Cann’t wait…!

Hi
Thanks for the heads up.Its a good excuse to go to Bristol and stay-over.I live in Windsor but we spent a night last October in Bristol to see Jeff Beck at the Colston Hall and it was very worthwhile.
I used to see things like harpsicord recitals at St Georges back in the 70's and saw Tthe Australian Guitarist , Tommy Emmanuel there several years ago. It's a nice venue with a high ambience which will suit Towner well . I have many albums and used to use "Solo Concert" regularly for demonstration. Must dig it out.
Regards

Great venue. I've seen Cara Dillon and Brad Mehldhau there.

You are right, I have been lucky enough to have performed at St Georges myself and the acoustics are wonderful.

Bob, you're in for a huge treat. Ralph Towner is truly one of the greats.

Fred, I think I will be in for a treat. I still cann't believe that I haven't seen him live yet.
If you ever get the chance to play this venue grab it with both hands. It's the most perfect size and acoustics for piano. I saw KeithTippett there a couple of months ago. You could have heard a pin drop when he took it right down. Nowere to hide sonically, but I know that you would be up for that!
Take care , Bob

Sounds perfect, Bob ... now all I need is a gig!

"Sounds perfect, Bob ... now all I need is a gig!"
Fred, I would have a word with the A&R people at your Record Label. The venue is only about 40 miles from their HQ...

Bob, thanks for your enthusiasm and interest.Fred, I would have a word with the A&R people at your Record Label. The venue is only about 40 miles from their HQ...
The thing is, such word would be much more meaningful, and have a greater chance of producing results, coming from the audience base. An artist who wants a gig 6,000 miles away? Imagine that! (insert emoticon here) Hey, we all want that gig ... dime a dozen. But what really counts is that the label and venue see that folks will actually show up and fund the venture. That's what it comes down to.
All best,
Fred

I may have been confused because Bob posted on Feb 2 that he was gonna hear Towner on the 3rd, so I assumed Feb 3.
Fortunately, I have the ability to hear into the future, and believe me, it sounds great!

Hey Fred! I'm hearing your future now! We're working on high resolution downloads! Have any? DSD? Great to see you on this thread..

Hey Cookie! So great to hear from you.
My last three albums are on Naim, and they do offer hi-rez downloads in their online store.
Other stuff, Windham Hill, Columbia, etc. I don't own the masters ... wish I did!
BTW, what's DSD?
All the best,
Fred

(OK ... now?) So, Bob, how was Ralph's gig?

Went to the gig last night at the Purcell Room (accompanied by the excellent Paolo Fresu). It was absolutely stunning, particularly the second set.
The Standard gave it a five-star review, and deservedly so. The two musicians have a remarkable rapport.
