Can Anyone Identify This Psychedelic Snippet?
Posted by: Ghettoyout on 19 July 2013
Bit of a long shot, but I thought it worth a go ...
Following a link placed on this forum regarding the John Peel archive (http://www.johnpeelarchive.com/), I watched some of the video/TV offerings (hover over the golden disk towards the centre of the image). There was some wonderful psychedelic music on the film Suffolk Comforts.
Can anyone tell me the artist and name of track of the music that on the Estimated Time Left counter runs from 16:12 to 15:55 on the Suffolk Comforts film?
It's very gentle and rather wonderful and hippies can be seen at this point in the film.
Hope someone recognises it. I'm at a loss and need this in my collection.
I remain,
Ghetto Yout'.
I even tried to "Shazam" it but it came back with nothing. Sorry, at least I tried!
Sounded very vaguely familiar, but in a generic sense ... could not identify. Sorry.
Might be worth checking out albums recorded on Peel's record label, dandelion.
I've checked out Creation by Beau and A candle for Judith by The way we live, but it's not on either.
Forgot how good these albums are and how depressing creation is. (In a good/funny way). It's hard to believe Morrissey wasn't influenced by it.
Blythe - thank you for trying Shazam. Much appreciated. Alas it is too obscure.
Fred Simon - yes I do agree it is quite generic and very hummable too. Thank you for taking the trouble to take a listen.
Fatcat - thanks for the hint regarding Dandelion records. Somewhere I do have a compilation of their output but I do not recognise it. Thank you for the Beau track. Most enjoyable and one to investigate some more.
There is an app called gracenote that apparently has a bigger database than Shazam and that is my next step.
Thanks for everyone's help so far.
Well I've had a bit of progress. Signed myself up to a You Tube channel that has posted this film and asked them. Although they did not know for sure they thought it might be a Tyrannosaurus Rex track.
Sadly I'm not familiar with their output. Does it ring a bell with anyone?
Best etc.,
Ghetto Yout'.
That's interesting Ghetto Yout. Tyrannosaurus Rex was fronted by Marc Bolan of course, who was a very flowery hippy in the mid 60s.
The track didn't sound like them to me, but it had no vocals of course, and I don't know all their output. But it could make sense because John Peel and Marc Bolan were close friends at that time and spent lots of time together.
You could be on the right track - keep going!
Cheers
David
I think it is the Incredible String band, but I can't place the track, and I'm not convinced that it is a recording from any available album.
ISB - that's interesting. Never thought of them. Peel was a big fan of them.
The film was made by Seventh House Films (or something like that) and I sent them an e-mail yesterday. So we will see what happens. I've also tried thespace who also have this film. No luck yet though.
It's clearly a quite obscure track.
Thank you for taking a listen Deeply.
The plot thickens - sort of.
I've had a reply from the producer of the film. He cannot be sure but reckons it's by The Incredible String Band. That's now two suggestions for the ISB.
Are there any Incredible String Band aficionados out there who may recognise it? Worringly, Deeply reckons it does not come from any available album. If so, where does it come from?
Progress is being made bit by bit. Just need that final breakthrough.
G Yout'.
Well so far no ISB experts have stepped in.
Could it be by Dr. Strangely Strange (but not from Kip of the Serenes)?
From the ISB I know, it does not sound too like them in my opinion but I only know a small portion of their work.
Be most grateful some more suggestions if possible.
Best etc.,
GY.
Chief Chirpa,
Thank you very much for solving this puzzle. Your wonderful efforts are much appreciated. So I need to order this and the new Boards of Canada release. Two treats to look forward to.
Not sure what boom shanka means but I man thank you anyway.
Nuff tings a gwaan as we say in this parish,
Pip pip,

I love The Incredible String Band! They were ... incredible!
Never "got" ISB one of Joe Boyd's failures in my book.
Never "got" ISB one of Joe Boyd's failures in my book.
Gotta agree with you there H.
ISB seem a bit minor and twee compared to the likes of Pink Floyd, John Martyn, Nick Drake, Nico, Brotherhood of Breath, James Booker, Richard Thompson, Defunkt, Dagmar Krause, etc
That's as maybe BigH47 and Kevin-W, but surely you have to like the first part of The Song Has No Ending, Parts 1-9. It's superb. Mine has already been ordered and can't wait.
The John Peel film has quite a lot of snippets of fine music on it from various ages. Here are some more easily identifiable ones:
The Bardots - Sad Anne

Jesus and Mary Chain: Darklands

The Ramones - Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World

Kevin Coyne - I Want My Crown

There is also some stuff that sounds like Cutty Ranks. Don't suppose anyone knows what it is do they (around the 7:30 to 8:20 portion)?
Ghetto Yout'
PS had to look up the term 'boom shanka' (need to get out more) and I can well imagine Richard Dane saying it breaches one of the forum rules!
I have to admit the first instrumental piece above of ISB is quite good, although it does sound a bit sub Morricone western picture music it seemed to go downhill after that with part 2, jazz folk, it seems. Never could figure out with jazz why playing out tune with each other is regarded a clever, just sounds like our school band on day one (or any other day for that matter). Ah part 3, obligatory sitar sounds.
Overall as people may guess, not been converted.
Fortunately that Youtube clip did actually have an ending.
My word Chief Chirpa, this is impressive. You certainly know your stuff. Thank you for the information.
Let's say someone asked you for recommended songs by Admiral Bailey, Cutty Ranks and Tenor Saw. What do you imagine you would say?
Yours inna King David Stylee,
Ghetto Yout'.
Err, correct I did not know what you meant by TrackID but I do now. Wasn't sure what ftw meant either but 'for the win' seems to be it.But I could be wrong. .
Yes I thought you had this phenomenal knowledge of music and knew your reggae back to front. Sorry about that. I really do need to get out more. Bad condition a yard. Seen?
Thanks for your assistance in identifying the tracks and bringing TrackID to my attention.
Keep up the good work.
Pip pip,
