Posted by: mezza on 26 July 2013

Help please this is driving me mad, I have a Unitiqute  in my living room which is Ethernet to my virgin superb hub which is in the above bedroom my music files are all in flac which are stored on a 2nd 1tb hard drive inside my windows vista home premium computer the computer is connected wireless to the virgin super hub my problem which ill get to soon is made worse if I connect my PC to the super hub by ethernet I use a ipad mini which as the n stream app on to connect to the asset upnp server my problems being 1 on the n stream app if I choose auto connect it comes up with no devices found? 2 when listening to music it cuts out very often then comes back on I have noticed on the n stream app that the buffering drops to below 50% or even 0% that's when the music stops and only comes back on if the buffering goes back to 100% which is not always the case 3 when I come out of the n stream app then go back to it it takes an age to pick up the asset server although my sons laptop is always visible? I have been on the asset forum and the only reply I got was to Ethernet my pc to the super hub but that only makes matters worse I have checked all my connections and cables which are cat5e my thinking is could it could it be my pc or the sper hub please please someone help me

The Virgin Superhub is a known problem I believe. I think the cure is to use it purely as a modem and then use a separate router and switch (if needed) for DHCP and network purposes

Hi thank you for your response, thats what i believe too that the superhub is not a good wireless router, i may look into getting a better one and use as you say as a modem any suggestions on what router?

thanks

I had to do this after much gnashing of teeth trying to get the 'Super' hub to do the job.  It is testament that you can in fact polish a turd - all packaging and no content. G

Hi Mezza, if you look here, there is a recent explanation as to why the Virgin SuperHub is a "SuperTurd" and a couple of fixes.

Thanks to all who have replied, yes im going to get a Asus RTN56U or 66U router and use the superturd, lol, in modem mode and see if that helps

Well i bought a Asus RTN56U router and put my superturd (as the virgin super hub is known) router into modem mode and i'm still having the same problem, i have all connections etherneted by cat6e cables at least now the n-stream app on my ipad mini sees the unitiqute and connects automatically so i don't have to enter the ip address as before with the virgin super hub but it still stops playing and n-stream saying server not responding or no servers ? its really spoiling the enjoyment to listening to the music, could it be my unitiqute/ asset upnp/ or my computer? please someone advise on what it is thanks

Assign a static IP address to your Qute. If necessary do this in wireless mode and then reconnect the cables. I had the same problem with BT when I first got a Uniti. Never a problem since. I'll guarantee it's not the Qute. When routers keep reassigning different IPs the signal seems to get interrupted. Not a problem for a lot of equipment but your Qute wants a stable 'feed'.

Hi, thanks for the advice dont want to sound stupid but how do i go about assigning a static ip address, do i do that on the pc or in the router settings?

iPad>settings>enter IP address that you got from the UQ in the factory settings. Easy.

Using the Qute remote, hit the setup button (looks like a spanner or wrench), go to "Network Settings" and turn off DHCP.  This will give you a chance to assign a static address to your Qute. I hope Andy is right, and this will fix the problem you are having. If this doesn't help, it may be best to call your dealer on Monday.

Good luck.

Hi Hook, did what you said but under DHCP there is only an option to turn off/on it does not offer an option to enter a IP address, i think you set a static IP address in the router? but not sure how i do that, but thanks for your reply its really nice to know there are people on this forum who care

Mezza,

It's on the PC. Go in Windows explorer and find the Network. Open that and select the router. You will need to access the router using your password etc.  Don't know exactly how the Asus is configured but if you hunt around you should find a list of device settings with an IP address for each device. Pick the Qute connection (unfortunately not always shown as Naim but as a string of characters) and you should have an option to 'Always use this IP address'.

It is easier than it sounds but Hook is right. If in doubt ring your dealer or Naim (after 12th August).

The DHCP setting on the Qute doesn't need to be off and is probably best left as 'Yes' in case you should ever want it to connect to other networks etc.

Try doing it wired up first, the Asus probably doesn't have the same issues as the original BT hub. Only try it wirelessly if no joy.

Get back to me if I can help. I'll check in tomorrow morning sometime.

Mezza and Andy -

There are two ways to accomplish this same thing. You can have the Qute use DHCP, but then tell your router to always assign the Qute a fixed address.  Or, you can turn off DHCP, and set up the fixed address on Qute Itself. Section "4.6.2 Non-DHCP (Static) Network Connection" of the manual shows how to do this by using the remote:

"...If DHCP is de-selected in the Network Settings menu, five further parameters will be displayed.

Parameter

IP:
Mask:
Gateway (Gtwy): DNS1:
DNS2:

Options

User definable (numerical entry) Default: 192.168.0.80
User definable (numerical entry) Default: 255.255.255.0

User definable (numerical entry) Default: 192.168.0.1
User definable (numerical entry) Default: 192.168.0.1

User definable (numerical entry) Default: 192.168.0.1

..."

You might find this easier to do than logging into your router, but that's up to you.  Either method can work.  Good luck!

Guys, Hook's suggestion is fine, just please bear the following.

A) the ip address options that Hook gives above will vary from router to router. If you get these wrong nothing will work.

If you can provide the address details of say your iPad or PC or MAC from its network settings here on the forum and provide the following:

  • default gateway address (Internet router address)
  • Subnet mask
  • DNS (which might be the same as default gateway address)

Then we (I) can help advise some appropriate settings to hardware into your UQ.

B) if you manually assign the UQ, without blocking the address off in the router, you will always need to ensure the UQ is powered up and running  before the Internet router is powered up. Take care after power cuts.
