UnitiServe SSD Can't Set Up Music Store - "State Offline"

Posted by: Andrew P.. on 30 July 2013

I am trying to use a UnitiServe SSD for the 1st time & am having problems getting things running

It is connected to my network along with a Synology DS413 NAS drive & my laptop. The router is from Sky.

The Serve lists both the NAS drive & laptop showing Network Shares as status enabled but the state is showing as Offline

So when I try to add the NAS as a Music Store it can't as it says it's offline

Can anyone help on how I get it working please

What permissions have you enabled for the NAS shared folder ? There should also be some basic requirements set out in the unitiserve manual....assume you have read it ?

Andrew, do this and see if works... after pulling out and pushing back in all the RJ45 (network) cables to the NAS, Unitiserv and router...

1. do what PureHiFi said with regard to the share permissions on the Synology - should be an 'everybody' gets 'all' access  (I use Netgear, so don't know exactly how Synology implements it).

2. Power down completely the Synology

3. Power down the Uinitserv

4. wait 5 mins

5. Power on the Synology and wait for it to fully complete its power on stuff (couple of minutes?)

6. Power on the Unitiserv.

Let us know what happens !

PS if you have a religion, I would recommend a short prayer to your maker before starting.

Andrew, make sure that the "workgroup" setting for the nas is "Naim" (no quote marks) and not "home" or something else.  I don't know if that's your issue, but it's a necessary step to get the uServe to see the nas properly I think.

You can find this by opening the Control Panel, and in the Win/Mac/NFS control panel, the very first field should be for the workgroup.  Put NAIM in that box if it isn't already.

I hope that helps,

Bart

I have followed the suggestions but still getting the same issue

I'm sure a settling somewhere isn't right (my laptop also can't seem to see the NAS drive in order to map to it

There are almost no NAIM instructions & the Synology ones are vast but don't seem tailored to wanting to make it talk to the NAS drive / get rid of the "Offline" state

Sadly my IT skills don't seem upto it

Any other suggestions on the key settings etc on the Synology would be appreciated

Log into the nas gui from a browser.

on the nas as an experiemnt create a new share, call it something like music.

ensure that there is no password protection for it and that all users can read and write.

this should now be available on a mac in the finder window or on a pc under netowrk where you can map the drive.

copy some music files to it

see what the serves does.

it all sounds comlicated but the usual issue ispeople assuming they need to secure their shares because the option is there, but really its not necessery for simple needs such as basic samba sharing which is all you need.

Hi Andrew

I have got a UnitiServe SSD and a Qnap NAS 112. I had exactly the same problem. It showed my 'Store' Where all my CDs are ripped to, and my 'Share' where I keep all my Hi-Res downloads, as offline. This is what I did...

I deleted the 'Store' and the 'Share' from the UnitiServe, using my browser (192.168.1.65).

I then manually entered the 'Store' and the 'Share' on the UnitiServe, using my browser (192.168.1.65) Make sure that you enter the name after the \\ not before. eg. \\nasc249ef\music.

Make sure that the NAS drive name, and the laptop name that you enter, is exactly as it's described on your Sky router. Give it about five minutes, then refresh the store & share. I did this and the lights turned from red to green!

I'm not saying that will solve your problem, but it solved mine.

As many have already said, make sure that all you permissions are set correctly, even allow guests to have full access. Also, if prompted to set a password on the UnitiServe, I was advised to skip this, as it can sometimes confuse the system.

Good luck

David

David's "give it about five minutes" statement is important to note.  The systems don't talk to each other immediately.  It can take a little while for changes on the nas to be detected and digested (so to speak) by the uServe.  I need to remember to always take that advice myself!

Thanks for all the help - I spent a hour or so following through all the suggestions, rebooting & the Serve is now picking up the NAS drive & working - not quite sure what made the difference!

AllanB advices are good, but in this specific situation, removing the shares and setting them back manually generally does the trick.

When setting up shares in the DTC or n-Serve for OSX, there is an option to enter a username and password for the shared folder.  I have thought that it might be some permissions problem that is giving me fits, so I have tried to enter the nas username and password in these fields, but they NEVER "stick."

Is this a known behavior, or maybe indicative of some other problem?

Its demonstrating perhaps a lack of knowledge on your part?

that user name and password is not for the nas, its for the shares you set up on the nas. In reality when setting those shares up you dont really need to set any access rights unless there is a group of people accessing the nas and should not see each others stuff, unlikely in the most part at home.

In other words set up shares and grant every one read write permissions. You then don't need to put anything in the naim in terms of user names and passwords, and all in all everything is far easier.

I mis-spoke a bit Gary -- I've actually tried both but in no case do the Naim programs want to 'save' the credentials I enter.  Maybe this is irrelevant to any issues . . . but it makes me wonder why any info I enter won't 'stick' and whether it provides a clue as to why my backups are always "offline."

I should imagine the credentials you are entering are not correct. Is the share you set up as a store set for read write access for everyone including guests?

What NAS are you using?

Using a Synology nas -- 212J.  I'm pretty sure the credentials are right; will triple-check when I get home.  If they were not right I'd expect the Naim DTC to remember them but access would fail, as opposed to the Naim DTC not even remembering them.

Bart if your nas is set as i say, there are no credentials to enter, just ignore that bit.

I'm sure youre right to ignore this bit . . . I was just hoping it might be indicative of some other reason why my newly created backup destinations work once but thereafter are never accessible by the uServe again as they appear "offline."

Think about what range of fixed IP addresses you want to use and set that range aside and outside the DHCP range of addresses in your router / modem settings (models vary here as to how you do it). You effectively tell your router / modem not to use that range of fixed IP addresses when allocating DHCP addresses (some routers do this the opposite way around, you tell them what range to use for DHCP, what's left is available for 'fixing').

Lastly, make a record of those fixed IP address settings for the NAS & UServe, you will be surprised on the few occasions you will need them again, usually after a firmware update.

How to give UServe a fix IP? I don't see I have this option in UServe's web-based UI

Posted on: 07 August 2013 by hungryhalibut

You need to go into the router's setup.

In my limited networking knowledge, in the router you can set whether to use DHCP server or not. But using DHCP server doesn't necessarily mean you can't have fixed IP for your devices in the network. These are not mutually exclusive. I need to have DHCP server on for visitors' device. But my NDS, NAS, and iMac have been assigned fixed IP by manually entering the IP in the network setup. Unitiserve doesn't have this option so far as I see from the web-based UI.

Depending on your router, you may be able to reserve an IP address for the Unitiserve.  If the router will do this then there will be a table or similar where you can enter the MAC ID of the US and the router will always allocate the same IP address against the MAC ID.
