Firmware 3.21 + Fault 36

Posted by: rjstaines on 13 August 2013

Anyone else done the 3.21 upgrade on an NDS and got the (dreaded) Fault 36 at the end of it ?  PC update app says completed OK, but NDS not happy

Now starting the "switch off, wait 30 minutes & power back on" fix.

Posted on: 13 August 2013 by rjstaines

Yes, the 30 minute wait fixes the problem - the NDS is now playing...

...and SEEKING to TIME

Nice one you guys in Salisbury, thanks.

Hi rjstaines,

I just completed the firmware upgrade with my Uniti and it seems sound better than the old version.  The most obvious improvement is in the airy feeling of the music presented.

I love the new version very much.  Time will tell me the improvements.

Enjoy your toy with the new version.

Cheers,

Patrick

I got that fault 36 error as well...... not sure if this can be fixed by the power-off wait......

Just done my NDS. No problems at all.

Hi, is this "seeking to time" feature works via a remote? I am pressing "FF" and "FR" buttons but nothing happens.....

It's the progress bar in nstream app that can now be moved by hand, so slide the progress bar forward or backward and the player skips to that point in the track that's playing.

Of course, if you're not using nstream

I doubt if it would work via the remote. It would be far more difficult to implement in the way you would expect like a CD player using FF / FR. When using the slider in nStream it only needs to send one seek command when you take your finger away. So, for example if you remove your finger 2/3's of the way along the slider, I would expect it to calculate 2/3's of the track duration and issue a seek to this point, after which the player would resume playback.

To work with a remote it would need to keep sending seeks in small increments or decrements which would be far more prone to errors.

Just my opinion of course...

This is a real shame that this seek to time feature does not work for remote. I am using n-stream but really I was hoping that FF and FR buttons on the remote will work. I like using n-stream but still for basic operation the use of remote is best and most convenient. Something like 10 - 15 seconds skip intervals would be sufficient. Just to be able to skip long 'intros' in some of songs:-)

I wonder how they managed to implement such feature in 'squeezebox' streamers. It works without any problems.

Posted on: 15 August 2013 by DaveBk

I'm not saying it's impossible, just more challenging. Squeezebox has a slightly easier job as all the components are from one supplier so they can engineer a solution end to end. Naim has chosen to implement uPnP in an attempt to be interoperable with other servers and control points. This is probably a good busiess decision, but makes it far more difficult to implement features that are not fully adopted and tested across a wide range of equipment.

It seems that whatever you needed to do to temporarily clear Fault 36 you need to also do the same thing after the 3.21 upgrade. In my case this was to leave the NDS powered down over night. The difference now is that the Fault 36 does not reappear.

I left powered off overnight and still get Fault 36. Still works from IPad and IPhone, just can't use remote

Phil.Harris @ naimnet dot com is your man, Steve.  He'd love to hear from you, I'm sure...

Oops I spoke too soon my Fault 36 came back later in the day too.

Anyone know the latest from Naim on this? It's gone a bit quiet.

I was hoping that Fault 36 on my NDS would disappear with the new firmware. It has not. This is annoying since I am obliged to power the unit up and down repeatedly typically once a day. I saw that someone had its unit replaced because of that error. I am not sure it solved the problem. I think this is a major annoyance. The problem has been pointed by forum members for quite some time. Can we hope for a fix from NAIM?

Cheers,

Michel

Jeremy, Michel - email Phil Harris - he has a fix available & is keeping track of those of us who have this problem... so the more of us who contact him, the better he will be aware of the problem... and the sooner those nice chaps at Naim will come out with a 'public' fix.

Hi RJ,

Thank you for the info.

Posted on: 21 August 2013 by JeremyB

Thanks RJ, I did email Naim support but no reply yet. I'll try ccing the address you gave.

Actually I have tried power down for 3 days and so far after 24 hours no Fault 36 on the display

How does your SQ compare in the version with and without the fix?

Jeremy,

I mailed to Phil Harris early this afternoon and got back a patch that seems to fix the problem after following his instructions. You will need to reinstall firmware 3.21 though. I guess you will get an answer soon.

Allen, true if you exclude the occasional gapless glitches. Getting that this evening. Really hope that is fixed soon.

I haven't applied the fix to 3.21 as yet - the incidence of Fault 36 hasn't yet reached 'intolerable'.  When I applied it to 3.17 previously it fixed the problem and I didn't hear any change in SQ (but as I've mentioned before, I have pink, not golden ears)

I applied the patch to cure the fault 36 without knowing that it might affect the sound of the NDS. Thus, I did not look for any sound change and was not particularly attentive to th possibility. What I can say is that I was not struck by anything. Nevertheless, if you can live with fault 36, stay with it. You will save one firmware update. Cheers, Michel

Great Jeremy... but isn't it uncomfortable sitting there with everything crossed ?

Posted on: 23 August 2013 by JeremyB

Ok 96 hours and Fault 36 is back.
